Jonathan has a broad practice encompassing the range of Chambers’ work with a particular focus on police law, public / administrative law, employment law, inquests and public inquires.

Position

Jonathan is recognised as a leading junior specialising in police law, inquests, public inquires and public / administrative law. He has a particular interest and experience in cases touching upon matters of national security.

Recent cases include the Brook House Inquiry (for the Independent Monitoring Board), the UK COVID-19 Inquiry (for the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency), the inquest into the death of Yassar Yaqub (for the National Crime Agency), the inquest into the death of Jalal Uddin (for Greater Manchester Police), the inquest into the death of Lewis Skelton (for the Chief Constable of Humberside Police), the Grenfell Tower Inquiry (for the Home Office), Prior and others v Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis [2022] ICR 398) (overtime and allowances claims by Royalty and Specialist Protection officers) and the Police Overtime Claims Litigation (representing almost every police force in England and Wales).

Jonathan has previously acted in the Inquests into the London Bombings of 7 July 2005, the Inquests into the deaths arising from the Hillsborough Stadium disaster, the ‘Phone Hacking’ litigation and in the Tunisia Inquests (as Counsel to the Inquests).

Jonathan is the co-editor of 5 Essex Chambers’ Insight: Inquests and Inquiries.

Career

Called to the Bar 2007; member of the Attorney General’s A Panel of Counsel (having been on the B Panel (2017 – 2022) and the C Panel (2013 – 2017)); Assistant Coroner for Northamptonshire.
