Richard is a specialist employment and commercial lawyer, who was called to the Bar following a successful career as a litigation solicitor and partner with City law firm, Travers Smith.

Position

Richard is a specialist employment lawyer, covering a wide range of employment related issues for both public and private clients. He has considerable experience and expertise in discrimination cases, particularly related to disability, and frequently acts for police forces and others in tribunal claims up and down the country.
Richard also practises in police law more generally, including pension appeals and misconduct cases.

Richard is also an experienced personal injury practitioner.

Recent cases include:
Jeynes v Chief Constable of Gloucestershire Constabulary: Richard acted for the Respondent in successfully defending this disability discrimination claim which was heard over 2 weeks in the Bristol Employment Tribunal.
Geddes v Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains Ltd: Richard acted for Mercedes in successfully defending this claim for constructive dismissal brought by a former Formula 1 engineer in the Cambridge Employment Tribunal.
Bikkannavar v Ladbrokes: Richard acted for Ladbrokes in successfully defending this claim for unfair dismissal in the Watford Employment Tribunal.

Richard is the co-author of “Disability Discrimination in Employment”, published by OUP in 2009.

He is a contributor to the latest edition of “The Employment Tribunals Handbook” , published in 2021.

Career

Before transferring to the Bar in 1995, Richard practised as a solicitor with City firm, Travers Smith, where he worked in the litigation department. He was made a partner in 1991.

Richard joined 5 Essex Chambers in 2005.
