Chris Garrod is a Director in the Corporate department of Conyers Dill & Pearman. He joined Conyers in 1997 and is a member of the Firm's insurance practice.

Chris specialises in advising on reinsurance and ILS structures, including large commercial insurers, life reinsurers, special purpose insurers, cat bonds, sidecars and segregated account vehicles. In addition to his insurance practice, he also advises on all aspects of Bermuda corporate law, including mergers and acquisitions, takeovers, reorganisations and re-domestications.

With over 15 years of experience working in Bermuda's reinsurance market, Chris acts for a number of large commercial insurers/reinsurers including Assured Guaranty, Chubb, Everest Re, Lazard Ltd, Markel Corporation, OneBeacon Insurance Group, Tokio Millennium Re, White Mountains Insurance Group and Zurich.

He has also been involved in the formation of a number of segregated account “alternative” reinsurance and ILS platforms, acting for reinsurers, investment hedge funds, investment managers, pension plans and investment banks. His clients include groups such as Mt. Logan Re, Shima Re, Sirius Capital Management, AQR Capital Management, ILS Capital Management, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and Société Générale. Additionally, he acts for numerous Lloyd’s syndicates which have platforms in Bermuda including Group Ark Syndicate and Brit Insurance. Finally, Chris sits on various reinsurance and captive boards in a non-executive capacity advising on Bermuda insurance regulatory and general corporate legal updates to those boards.

Internationally recognised as a leading lawyer, Chris has been recommended in a number of legal directories including Chambers Global and Legal 500, where clients note that his “main strengths are his responsiveness and depth of knowledge” and that he is “very knowledgeable about Bermuda regulations and has a good working relationship with the Bermuda Monetary Authority”.

Conyers Dill & Pearman has significant experience in advising on M&A, insurance and corporate restructuring. Developments include the funds team seeing a number of insurance-linked security (ILS) fund formations in 2017; fintech being a growing area for the firm's Bermuda office; and the shipping group seeing an increase in ship registrations in Bermuda. The practice continues to advise Seadrill on its group restructuring, including advice on effecting a large-scale restructuring of a Bermuda company and its group under Bermuda law, as well as parallel proceedings pursuant to a Chapter 11 filing under the US Bankruptcy Code and judicial proceedings in Bermuda. In other areas, Chris Garrod acted for Unikrn in the formation of Unikrn Bermuda and its Unikrn token sale and cryptocurrency platform; and Neil Henderson led advice, as Bermuda adviser, to Roivant Sciences (Roivant) on a $1.1bn equity investment in Roivant, led by SoftBank Vision Fund. Other recommended directors include corporate head David Cooke, Sophia Greaves, who is noted for securitisations, M&A and insurance regulation, and shipping practice head David Astwood. Conyers Dill & Pearman acts for a large number of Bermuda’s insurers and reinsurers, including class 4 and class E companies, as well as all other classes of insurers, including captive insurers and special purpose insurers; the practice routinely acts in anti-suit injunctions in relation to foreign proceedings, applications to the Supreme Court arising out of arbitrations, substantive arbitrations, and providing expert evidence on Bermuda law. Charles Collis heads the Bermuda insurance practice; Chris Garrod led advice to AXA on an agreement to acquire the Bermuda-based XL Group, a global property and casualty commercial lines insurer and reinsurer; and Michael Frith provided Bermuda legal and regulatory advice on the formation and group structure of the Langhorne Group, including Langhorne Holdings and Langhorne Reinsurance (Bermuda).
