Career

Charles Collis is a Director in the Corporate department in the Bermuda office of Conyers Dill & Pearman and is Head of the Bermuda Insurance Practice. Charles joined Conyers in 1990 and became a partner in 1998. Charles has just completed his four year secondment as Head of the London Office and has returned to Bermuda to focus on his busy insurance practice.

Charles specialises in insurance and reinsurance, advising on corporate and regulatory matters. Charles has advised on the establishment of numerous captive insurance companies, as well as commercial reinsurance companies. The convergence of the insurance markets and capital markets has led Charles to specialise in insurance linked securities. He has conducted a significant number of insurance securitisations and transformation transactions using special purpose vehicles, traditional reinsurance companies and segregated account companies.

Conyers‘ insurance and reinsurance practice, which is spearheaded by Charles Collis , is singled out for its ‘strong knowledge of the Bermuda insurance/reinsurance regulatory environment’. The department also handles the Bermuda law aspects of the formation and licensing of new general business insurers, life insurers and reinsurers and assists a variety of established insurers and reinsurers with capital raising, M&A and listing requirements. Under the leadership of Charles Collis  following Graham Collis ’ retirement, Conyers’ practice possesses an enviable track record in high-end IPOs, note and debt offerings, securitisation matters, and shipping and aircraft financing. The department has recently been involved in several major deals involving large cruise companies, and continues to retain major oil and gas clients, particularly for note offerings. Within the group, Victor Richards  specialises in high-value shipping and aircraft ship financings, Jason Piney is noted for his knowledge of aircraft securitisations and financings as well as capital markets work, Marcello Ausenda  is an all-rounder with extensive experience across a host of financing and capital markets deals, while Sophia Greaves  exhibits expertise in the regulations that affect public companies and financial institutions. Counsel Angela Atherden and Edward Rance , who was promoted to director in April 2021, are further names to note.

Bermuda > Corporate and commercial

Under the leadership of Charles Collis  following Graham Collis ’ recent retirement, Conyers’ corporate practice provides clients with ‘thoughtful, practical and timely advice about sophisticated legal questions under Bermuda law’. In addition to its considerable experience in large-scale M&A, the department also regularly advises on major corporate restructurings, shipping and aircraft issues and general corporate and commercial work, especially in the insurance space. Marcello Ausenda  places an emphasis on public company work, securities matters, financing issues, and corporate relocations and restructurings, whereas Jason Piney  stands out for his track record in high-stakes M&A and joint ventures.
