Career

Jason Chen’s practice focuses on commercial law, intellectual property, and arbitration. With almost a decade as serving as a Taipei District Court judge, he has significant experience in civil and criminal trials and enforcement. Notably, he was the first intellectual property professional judge certified by the Judicial Yuan. Since 2004, Jason has led Jones Day Taipei’s litigation team, managing diverse commercial, intellectual property, and arbitration cases. Since January 1, 2017, he has served as the Partner-in-Charge of the Taipei Office.

Jones Day’s Taipei-based dispute resolution practice is regularly instructed by major corporations to advise in relation to cross-border disputes, as well as in litigation before local courts and arbitral tribunals. Jason Chen, Ming-Wei Lo and Simon Yu jointly lead the team. Chen, a former judge, has broad experience, including in corporate governance, commercial arbitration, hostile takeovers, and breach of securities cases. Lo specialises in disputes arising from the Taiwan Securities Exchange Act. Co-lead Po-Chien Chen is based in Shanghai, and handles intellectual property and commercial disputes, as well as administrative litigation proceedings, for clients ranging from local entrepreneurs to global conglomerates.

Jones Day’s intellectual property team is particularly well known for handling patent and trade secrets disputes. Highly experienced IP lawyer Jason Chen co-leads alongside former district court judge Simon Yu in Taipei. Chen continues to represent a major semiconductor manufacturing company in relation to several intellectual property issues, including patent disputes and licence agreements, while Yu is noted for his strength in IP litigation. Third co-lead Po-Chien Chen is based in Shanghai, and specialises in trade secrets disputes, trademark matters, and privacy policy issues. Chen has previously advised several leading integrated circuit design houses in connection with IP disputes. Associate Barry Lai primarily deals with multijurisdictional litigation, particularly patent and trade secret disputes.
