Position

John has recently joined Bedell Cristin as a Partner in the Guernsey Financial Services team. He is a Guernsey Advocate and advises on Guernsey investment funds and corporate transactions, as well as regulatory and general corporate matters. He has a wealth of experience advising on the establishment, management and regulation of investment funds investing in private equity, venture capital, real estate, infrastructure and hedge funds.  In addition, he has expertise in significant corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, stock exchange listings, equity investments and joint ventures. He also advises on corporate governance, shareholder rights and the conduct of regulated businesses.

Career

John trained at the London office of City-based international firm, Simmons & Simmons, where he qualified into the Corporate Group in 2008. Prior to joining the Guernsey corporate department of another leading firm in 2012, he spent a number of years in the Simmons & Simmons’ Corporate team in the Middle East.

Team lead Dylan Latimer has experience assisting both private equity and real estate funds, including those listed on the LSE, with the full spectrum of matters arising over a fund’s lifecycle. John Scanlan joined the team from Carey Olsen in January 2023, bringing a wealth of expertise in hedge, infrastructure and venture capital funds to the team.

Bedell Cristin marshals expertise in all aspects of corporate and commercial law, including funds, banking and regulatory issues, advising clients on both international and Guernsey-based transactions. Leading the practice is the ‘very committed’ managing partner Kate Ovenden, who combines funds, banking and finance expertise with her substantial M&A practice. Dylan Latimer is the team’s private equity specialist, advising real estate and infrastructure investors on multi-jurisdictional transactions.  John Scanlan joined from Carey Olsen in January 2023, augmenting the firm’s M&A and investment fund offering, while insurance specialist Richard Sharp and associate James Walsh returned to Ogier in February 2023 and July 2022 respectively. Associate Tendai Gakanje is also recommended for M&A and corporate advisory work.
