With a comprehensive specific education and over a decade of experience in this practice areas, she has successfully conducted many major and complex operations in civil procedural law, insolvency proceedings and arbitration, for significant players in their respective sectors, such as industry services, real estate, energy, IT, transportation (aviation, shipping and maritime) hotels, pharmaceuticals and banking.

Her outstanding track record on disputes services include expert determination, SPA disputes, contentious valuations, arbitration, accounting integrity and conduct, insurance disputes, and competition damages claims.

Mafalda counsels insurance companies on a wide range of litigation and corporate governance matters. Her extensive knowledge of the insurance industry provides for deft representation of insurers opposing complex class action litigation. She regularly handles matters involving unfair trade practices, consumer fraud and policy coverage issues, as well as complex breach of contract and tort claims.

Her recent most relevant interventions are: advising and representing the Portuguese major insurance group and three of the biggest insurance companies operating in Portugal, in high value insurance and reinsurance disputes, complex professional indemnity claims and disputes involving captives; assisting on the recovery of a portfolio amounting to US$200 Million NPLs and advising the bank regarding reducing risk-weighted assets, conducting the legal procedures and advising on the strategy to be followed in each case; representing leading player of the tourism sector in hundreds of cases regarding breach of commercial contracts and claims arising from the multiple operations, including arbitral court proceedings and pre-judicial agreements; or issuing legal opinions on liability of flag Portuguese insurance companies, requiring the analysis and settlement of disputed coverage claims, and providing a variety of insurance counseling and advisory services to our clients on cases under the Insurance Portuguese law.

Education

Mafalda holds a Law Degree by the Law School of the University of Lisbon.
