Claudia Santos Cruz advises clients on the international and cross border aspects of their investments in Portugal and Lusophone Africa. She is co-head of the Lusophone Africa practice team at Morais Leitão which is dedicated to transactions and advising international clients investing in these markets. Claudia works on a daily basis with ML Legal Circle integrated law firms in Angola, Mozambique and Cape Verde and she is herself a member of the HRA Advogados team in Mozambique. Claudia coordinates the international Oil & Gas team and Shipping practice at ML and is also a member of the international Banking & Finance department.

Strong in both aviation and shipping, Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados‘ transport team covers all manner of financing, tax, insurance, litigation and regulatory matters related to these sectors. Segismundo Pinto Basto heads the aviation side of the practice, which regularly acts on behalf of national and international clients in civil and military aviation matters; the team advises both private and public carriers on asset management and contract negotiation. The maritime arm of the practice is headed by consultant Claudia Santos Cruz, and provides day-to-day assistance to clients, as well as advising them on vessel financing, ship arrest and other shipping-related matters.

The Mozambique practice at Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados sits within the firm’s wider Lusophone Africa practice and is jointly led by Lisbon-based partner Claudia Santos Cruz and André de Sousa Vieira in Porto. The team is heavily involved in many of the major securities and energy projects in Mozambique, advising on cross-border, inbound and outbound investments. Cruz, who has extensive experience on the latter, is an English qualified lawyer, and admitted to both the Mozambican and Portuguese Bar Associations. Viera is also qualified in England and Wales and Portugal, as well as being admitted to practice in Spain, and is an energy and natural resources project finance expert.

Angola > Foreign firms

Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados’ Angolan practice sits within the firm’s wider Lusophone Africa offering. Headed by Porto-based partner André de Sousa Vieira and Claudia Santos Cruz in Lisbon, the team advises on cross-border inbound and outbound investments into Lusophone Africa, with a strong presence in project finance, particularly in the energy and natural resources, commodities and transport sectors. The firm maintains a partnership with local firm ALC Advogados, of which private investment and tax expert Catarina Levy Osório  is a founding partner and consultant for the firm. International consultant Bruno Xavier de Pina, an expert in cross-border matters involving Angola and Cape Verde, joined the firm in 2021.
