A clear leader in the real estate sphere’, Clifford Chance’s practice is one of the largest in the market. The team advised Testa Residencial SOCIMI (a Spanish REIT) on a non-monetary share capital increase amounting to €665m, paid via the contribution of an extensive portfolio of residential buildings by its shareholders. Other clients include Deutsche Bank, El Corte Inglés and Merlín Properties SOCIMI. Practice head Carlos Portocarrero and Blanca Ochoa are the key names.

Led by Felipe Yanone, Garrigues’ practice is considered ‘a leading name for real estate instructions’. In one highlight, it acted for Marlín Properties SOCIMI on the sale of 19 hotels to Foncière de Murs for an aggregate value of €535m. Oscar de Santiago, who heads the practice in Barcelona, Lorenzo Clemente, Héctor Muñoz and Teresa Arranz are also noted.

Pérez-Llorca advises domestic and international clients active in the Spanish real estate market. Highlights included assisting Northwood Investors with its sale (via its affiliate company NW Diagonal SOCIMI) of Diagonal Mar Shopping Centre for the sum of €495m to Deutsche Bank. Luis Zurera, Vicente Estebaranz, Fausto Romero-Miura and Alejandro Osma are key names.

Uría Menéndez stands out for its ‘thorough knowledge of the market and dedication to clients’. Team co-head Fernando Azofra led advice to Metrovacesa Suelo y Promoción on the purchase of 179 land plots comprising 3,500 land registry units. Fellow co-head Diego Armero assisted Foncière des Murs with the acquisition of 19 hotels in Spain. Barcelona-based Ignacio Albiñana and associate Marta Gimènez Aliaga are also noted.

Commended for its ‘technical expertise and negotiation abilities’, Ashurst LLP advises on the full spectrum of work in the space. In one highlight, Ismael Fernández advised Sareb on the €553m sale of the Eloise portfolio. Cristina Calvo handled Iberdrola Inmobiliaria’s €145m sale of the Hilton Diagonal Mar Hotel. Cristina Calvo is also noted.

Notable work for Baker McKenzie’s team included advising FC Barcelona on the reconstruction of the Camp Nou, and the construction of the new Palau Blaugrana basketball court and a mini-stadium for FC Barcelona’s second team. Jorge Adell, Guillermo Rodrigo and Xavier Junquera are recommended.

An important name in the Spanish real estate space, Cuatrecasas has been active working for REITs and international investment funds on matters including real estate restructuring, distressed deals and related-litigation. The practice advises Hispania (one of the largest investors in the market) on all aspects of its real estate transactions, including acquisition, leasing and portfolio management. The team is led by Bernat Mullerat; Silvia Alcoverro is also noted.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer houses ‘a very knowledgeable team formed by great lawyers’, and has a core focus on transactional real estate mandates. Practice head Fernando Soto led advice to KKR and Altamar Capital Partners on their investment, with Spanish developer Elix Servicios Inmobiliarios, in the development and refurbishment of residential units for lease in Spain. Proprium Capital Partners, Dunas Capital, TPG Real and Ivanhoé Cambridge are among its clients.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo’s team advises on the full spectrum of work in the real estate sector, including construction, real estate finance and corporate transactions, and has particular expertise in property development and planning. It advised US investment fund Invesco on the €358m acquisition of a commercial real estate portfolio. Joaquim Riera, newly promoted partner Ana López and recent arrival Luciano Parejo Alfonso are key names. Enrique Isla joined the firm in 2018 from King & Wood Mallesons. Alfonso Fernández-Puebla joined Simmons & Simmons LLP.

Linklaters, which provides ‘commercially oriented’ advice, acts for domestic and international clients at all stages of the real estate cycle and is applauded for its technical excellence and broad coverage. In one highlight, it advised Neinver and TH Real Estate on the acquisition of the Nassica Shopping Centre from KKR. Intu Properties, Apollo Global Management, Cerberus Capital Management and UBS are clients. Practice head Rafael Molina is the key contact. Managing associate Gabriel Cabello is also noted.

Highlights for DLA Piper LLP included handling all due diligence issues for Irus European Retail Property Fund pertaining to the sale of a portfolio of outlets throughout Europe in a deal exceeding €1.2bn. Other clients include ING Real Estate, GE Capital, Grupo Didra and Talus Real Estate. Orson Alcocer leads the team.

Dentons’ team acted for Avenue Capital on matters concerning the funding of a new business line opened by Quabit for the acquisition of land parcels intended for the development of high-end residential schemes. Property financing expert Jesús Varela is the key name.

Hogan Lovells International LLP’s team recently assisted ING Real Estate with two credit schemes provided to Axiare Patrimonio SOCIMI, with an aggregate value of €120m, for the acquisition of five logistics warehouses and an office building in Madrid. Triuva, La Salle Investment Management and Leonardo Hotels are among its clients. Emilio Gómez is the name to note.

Ramón y Cajal AbogadosFrancisco Bengoetxea is ‘a great negotiator, with a vast knowledge of the real estate sector’ and fellow practice director Roberto Tojo stands out for ‘his versatility and dedication to clients’. The practice advises Pestana Hotel Group on matters pertaining to the drafting of all necessary documentation to carry out refurbishment works in a listed public building in Madrid’s Plaza Mayor.

At Allen & Overy, practice head Santiago de Vicente has vast experience advising local and international clients on a variety of property, corporate and financing-related issues. The practice assisted Bain Capital with its acquisition of a NPL portfolio (Project Fleta) from Ibercaja Banco in a €500m deal.

Highlights for Bird & Bird team included advice to Sidercom Inmobiliaria on the acquisition of an office building in San Sebastián, which comprised a due diligence exercise, negotiation and drafting of all relevant documents and lease agreements. Isidro del Moral is the key name.

At Broseta Abogados, highlights included acting for Kefren Capital on the €22m sale of a logistics park in Madrid. María Luisa Guardo is the name to note.

CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo’s practice head Álvaro Otero led advice to CPPIB Liberty on the €540m acquisition of a student’s residence portfolio from Blackstone.

Deloitte Legal advises local and international clients on complex, cross-border real estate matters. Juan Martínez Calvo leads the practice.

Eversheds Sutherland Nicea assisted Harbert Management Corporation with the acquisition of an office building in Madrid from BBVA for approximately €36m. Javier Ibáñez and Rafael Arráez are the key names.
