Ashurst LLP’s insurance practice receives praise for its ‘attention to clients’ needs and quick response to enquiries’. Practice head María José Menéndez, counsel Francisco de León and associate Rafael Fernández are the names to note. Highlights included assisting Aviva Europe with the sale of life insurance company Aviva Vida y Pensiones, which included the indirect sale of Aviva Gestión, and the disposal of Aviva Europe’s interests in Unicorp Vida, Compañía de Seguros y Reaseguros, Caja España Vida, to Santa Lucía; the aggregate value was €475m.

Cuatrecasas which fields one of the largest teams in the market, handles insurance-related tax, corporate, litigation and labour matters. It has been kept busy advising clients on banking and insurance restructuring matters. In one highlight, it acted for AIG, Liberty and XL (the sureties) on the global restructuring of FCC’s corporate debt. Other work included advising Mutua Madrileña on the €280m acquisition of an approximately 2.1% interest in CaixaBank. Practice head Eduardo Ramírez, Carlos Ferrer, Carlos Bonhome and Rebeca Rodríguez are the names to note.

Garrigues acts for several major European insurance groups, providing the full spectrum of legal services, including handling regulatory, corporate and transactional matters, and insurance and reinsurance litigation. The practice acted for the sellers (including Aegon, Allianz and Seguros Bilbao among others) on the €50m sale of Inverseguros Group to Dunas Capital. Other clients include Banco Santander, Generali and the Association of Andorran Banks. The firm’s insurance department sits as part of the firm’s corporate practice, which is led by Álvaro López-Jorrín and Mónica Martín de Vidales, with Fernando Vives and Javier Urbano also active. Associates Félix Ferreño and Luis Covarrubias are also noted.

A powerhouse in the insurance arena’, Hogan Lovells International LLP fields a 16-strong team headed by Joaquín Ruiz-Echauri and Luis Alfonso Fernández and ‘excels’ at advising local and international clients on corporate, regulatory and contentious matters pertaining to the insurance industry. In one highlight, it acted for top Spanish insurer Santa Lucía on the acquisition of a 50% interest in Unicorp and Caja España Viva, as well as handling the purchase of a retail life insurance business from Aviva and other connected corporations; the aggregate value was €475m.

A powerhouse in the insurance arena’, Uría Menéndez acts for local and international clients on big-ticket, cross-border insurance transactions. Highlights included advising Banco de Sabadell, Zurich and Bansabadell Vida on a VIF monetisation reinsurance between Bansabadell Vida and Swiss Re, which comprised Bansabadell Vida’s entire individual life-risk portfolio. AXA, AIG, Mutua Madrileña and VidaCaixa are other clients. Guillermo San Pedro and José María Segovia lead the group. Associate Alejandro Linares is also noted.

Clifford Chance regularly handles complex insurance transactions. Practice head Jaime Sánchez led advice to AXA on the acquisition of the Polish insurance business of Liberty Mutual Insurance. Other work included assisting Chubb Insurance Company of Europe (CICE) with the transfer of its non-life insurance business to ACE European Group (AEGL), as well as handling the cross-border merger between CICE and AEGL.

Clyde & Co LLP’s team has vast expertise in a variety of complex and contentious matters with particular emphasis on international insurance. In a high-profile case, the team acted for Allianz in settlement negotiations with the Spanish relatives of the victims of the Germanwings crash; it also defended the interests of the clients’ co-insurers, as well as Germanwings and Lufthansa. Ignacio Figuerol heads the practice. Ricardo Garrido, Pablo Guillén and Enrique Navarro are also key contacts.

Gómez-Acebo & Pombo’s team, which stands out for its ‘dedication to clients’, provides a full-service offering. Àngel Varela and Pablo Muelas (a former deputy director at the Ministry of Economy) lead the practice. Fernando Igartua and Santiago Gómez-Acebo are also key practitioners. The group is advising the Association Representative of Insurance Intermediaries of Financial Entities on matters concerning the implementation of the Insurance Distribution Directive. Other work included preparing a self-assessment report on survival tables of the Spanish population, for the Spanish Union of insurers and re-insurers (UNESPA), which will be used, among other things, to calculate premiums and mathematical provisions by the insurance industry.

Albors Galiano Portales represents clients in property damage claims and handles business interruption matters. Eduardo Albors and Javier Galiano are the key names.

DAC Beachcroft LLP handles a range of disputes from domestic to cross-border claims before the courts and arbitration tribunals. José María Álvarez Cienfuegos, José María Pimentel and Beatriz Rodríguez lead the group. Clients include AEGL, Zurich Insurance, Generali and AXA.

At Deloitte Legal, Ignacio Ortiz del Río heads the team which provides full-service advice to clients including Banca Sabadell Vida, UNESPA, Santa Lucía and Mapfre.

Herbert Smith Freehills LLP’s team stands out for its ‘fast responses, knowledge of the sector and quality of lawyers’. Practice head Paulino Fajardo is recommended. Clients include Mapfre, AIG, Markel and Red Eléctrica de España.

The team at RCD - Rousaud Costas Duran has notable expertise handling general liability, medical malpractice, personal injury, D&Os, corporate insurance and regulatory matters among others. The 11-lawyer group is led by Isabel Burón and Ruth Duque.

CMS Albiñana y Suárez de Lezo’s Carlos Peña advised Deutsche Bank on the registration and de-registration of foreign collective investment schemes before the Spanish regulators. MetLife, Aegon, Pembroke and Willis Iberia are clients.
