BonelliErede has ‘vast experience’ and ‘deep knowledge’ of complex litigation and international arbitration. Recent highlights include assistance to Syndial, a company owned by Eni, with an appeal concerning a severe sentence against the client for environmental damage. Gianni, Origoni, Grippo, Cappelli & Partners’ sizeable dispute resolution department is led by GianBattista Origoni and recently represented Residenziale Immobiliare 2004, a company which deals with redevelopment and marketing of real estate assets, in proceedings before the Court of Rome to seek damages for the breach of agreements and obligations concerning the construction of a luxury hotel and residence in Rome. Other notable highlights included defending the majority shareholder in Ansaldo STS Hitachi against a series of challenges and injunctions brought by minority shareholders against the client. Antonio Auricchio is another name to note.

Lombardi Segni e Associati is widely recognised as one of the leading addresses for civil, corporate and commercial litigation. In a recent highlight, the practice represented Italian steel plant Ilva under extraordinary administration in damages claims against Riva Fire; other work included defending Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena against damages claims brought by shareholders related to alleged misrepresentations in the client’s 2008 and 2011 prospectus. Highlights included defending Bank of China in a complex matter involving regulatory and criminal issues related to the alleged violation of Italian anti-money laundering regulations, and representing Nomura in a dispute with BMPS on the client’s alleged co-operation with BMPS’s former representatives in carrying out a transaction for unlawful purposes. Chiomenti Studio Legale provides ‘very high-quality’ services and recently defended Veneto Banca against damages claims brought by shareholders and bondholders on the grounds of alleged misselling of shares and bonds issued by the bank. The group also represented Morgan Stanley as claimant in a damages claim related to the insolvency of multinational Italian dairy and food corporation Parmalat. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP’s ‘legal analysis depth is impressive’. In recent work, the team represented French multinational mass media conglomerate Vivendi in two lawsuits brought by Reti Televisive Italiane, Mediaset and Finivest before the Civil Court of Milan concerning the agreement for the client’s purchase of pay TV service Mediaset Premium. Other highlights included the successful defence of Trenitalia against damages claims brought by Meis Elettromeccanica. Practice head Ferdinando Emanuele is an ‘excellent litigator’, who ‘stands out for his brightness and decisiveness’.

With a number of global financial institutions among its most notable clients, Clifford Chance is particularly adept at financial services litigation, but also proves highly experienced in contentious corporate and commercial matters, restructuring and insolvency litigation, and regulatory investigations as well as litigious IP, product liability and safety matters. Practice head Fabio Guastadisegni defended Goldman Sachs before the Court of Florence in a civil law suit filed by Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena in relation to a €600m credit facility and Antonio Golino defended Credit Suisse in criminal proceedings brought by Milan’s public prosecutor concerning alleged tax evasion and money laundering in relation to the sale of financial instruments to Italian residents. Recent highlights include assisting UniCredit and Banco BPM with an interim summary action introduced before the Court of Milan against the clients by shareholders of Italian heavy industry, steel industry and electric power company Carlo Tassara and challenging the validity of a complex restructuring plan. The practice is headed by Stefano Modenesi and Raffaella Quintana, who ‘is passionate and never gives up’. The practice assisted home improvement retailer Kingfisher France with an arbitration before the Chamber of Milan brought by Leroy Merlin Italia regarding the client’s alleged breach of representations and warranties in an M&A transaction. Other notable clients include New York University and Ariston Thermo. Practice head Francesca Rolla has ‘great expertise in litigation’ and offers ‘relevant, effective and tailored strategies for each matter’. Legance - Avvocati Associati specialises in financial and corporate litigation, as well as in insolvency proceedings and energy-related contentious matters. Recent highlights include advising Banca Nazionale del Lavoro on proceedings against a bus and railway company owned by state-owned holding company Ferrovie dello Stato, which involved matters of procedural and bankruptcy law, and administrative law as well as complex financial issues. Practice heads Stefano Parlatore and Daniele Geronzi, who is a ‘thorough legal professional’, are recommended. Cecilia Carrara is singled out for arbitration expertise.

The ‘excellent’ and sizeable Nctm Studio Legale regularly represents the EU Council before EU courts in proceedings concerning the defence of EU border tariffs on imports from various third countries. Pedersoli Studio Legale has an ‘effective, fact-based and problem-solving approach to all lawsuits’ developments’. The practice’s expertise covers a full gamut of contentious matters, from banking, securities, corporate, commercial and real estate litigation to domestic and international arbitration. Personal care and competence are among the distinctive features’ of Carnelutti Studio Legale Associato. The practice, headed by Margherita Barié, acted for Bristow Helicopters against Freeair Helicopters’ opposition to an injunction of payment that Bristow Helicopters obtained from the Court of Rome for unpaid helicopter rental fees. Eversheds Sutherland Associazione Professionale is ‘dynamic, flexible, easy to deal with and client-centred’. The team specialises in commercial, corporate and insolvency disputes; contentious cases related to intellectual property; banking and finance; and insurance, as well as domestic and international arbitration. Renato Fiumalbi, who joined from Tosetto Weigmann e Associati, heads the practice with Beatrice Bigonzi, who ‘deals with complex legal situations in a simple and straightforward way’.

Mondini Rusconi Studio Legalestands out’ for its ‘acumen on juridical solutions and advisory strength-in-depth’. The team represented Banco Popolare di Sondrio in a litigation before Italy’s highest administrative law court Consiglio di Stato regarding the constitutionality of a decree issued by banking regulation authority Banca d’Italia, which required the largest cooperative banks to convert to joint stock companies by the end of 2016. Intellectual property and M&A are key areas of Bird & Bird’s contentious activity, which also includes high-profile arbitration.
