Paul Friedland

Partner Paul Friedland discusses how White & Case LLP is adapting to changing client needs.

What has been your greatest achievement, in a professional and personal capability?

Earning and keeping the respect of colleagues, whether junior or senior, and of peers inside or outside my firm.

What do you do differently from your peers in the industry?

I don’t presume to be different or better than peers. I hold myself to a high standard in my written and oral advocacy, and try to maintain integrity, and I know that others whom I much respect and like do the same.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Learn Spanish, not French.

Can you give me a practical example of how you helped a client add value to the business?

Any arbitration victory under difficult circumstances adds value, I believe. Beyond that, the prime example that stands out to me is that of a repeat arbitration client whose arbitration regime we have changed in a way that adds tangible value to their business going forward.

Within your sector, what do you think will be the biggest challenge for clients over the next 12 months?

The opportunity presented by third-party funders is a challenge to master.
