Clifford Chance’s multidisciplinary practice draws together the resources of the firm’s finance and corporate teams. It handles headline local and crossborder mandates in the energy space and, in a recent highlight, advised Vršanská uhelná on its bid to acquire Vattenfall’s German lignite assets. The key figures are David Koláček and recently promoted counsel Petr Zákoucký, who is a regulatory specialist.

Kinstellar s.r.o advokátní kancelář has a strong track record in energy trading regulatory work and energy projects. The team is advising Net4Gas on the gas pipeline development between Poland and the Czech Republic, which has been designated a project of common interest. Kamil Blažek, who heads the firm’s infrastructure and projects group, has specialist expertise in the areas of smart energy, energy storage and energy efficiency.

Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP s.r.o. advokatni kancelar has extensive experience in the infrastructure and energy sectors. Petr Severa advised on the purchase of several renewable energy projects in Germany for flagship client ČEZ Group and, together with managing partner Karel Muzikar, assisted the same client with its contemplated bid for Vattenfall’s lignite mines and power plants in Germany.

White & Case (Europe) LLP’s practice spans project finance, development and regulatory advice. It has a strong practice in the utilities sector, where Vit Stehlík and others are assisting ČEZ Distribuce with the procurement process for supplies, services and construction works. Net4Gas and Česká spořitelna are also clients. David Plch is the key contact for financing work.

Allen & Overy’s ‘very good’ team leverages its considerable strength in financing to handle project finance mandates. Václav Valvoda and Robert David were part of a team assisting UniCredit Bank Czech Republic and Slovakia with an export finance loan provided to Russian fertiliser producer PhosAgro Cherepovets.

Dentons’ responsive team has experience in the energy space which cuts across M&A, competition and regulatory matters. The firm provides project finance expertise through Jiří Tomola and John Stansfield; both were part of a team assisting UniCredit Bank Czech Republic and Slovakia with refinancing provided to CE Energy. Ladislav Štorek is another name to note.

Kocián Solc Balastík’s energy and infrastructure team incorporates the firm’s excellent environment practice. Václav Rovenský and Tomáš Sequens are advising Carthamus on transforming an outdated facility to a biomassfired power plant, which includes representing the client in various administrative proceedings before the relevant authorities.

Wolf Theiss acts for clients such as Lukoil Aviation Czech, ČEZ and ČSOB. The team is advising Koch Supply & Trading on its natural gas trading activities in the Czech Republic. Counsel Jan Kotous is another name to note. Tomáš Rychlý left the firm in January 2017.

Marc Müller heads the team at bpv Braun Partners s.r.o., having joined from E.ON. Highlights for the practice included representing Raiffeisen Energy & Environment, owner of a photovoltaic power plant, in proceedings before the State Energy Inspection and Energy Regulatory Office. Pavel Vincík is ‘very experienced’.

Baker & McKenzie s.r.o., advokátní kancelář has a strong focus on transactions in the energy space. Tomáš Skoumal and Alexandr César jointly head the practice.

Boutique firm NH Partners, advokátní kancelář, s.r.o. has a strong disputes practice and experience in international arbitration cases. Jakub Hájek and Lukáš Nývlt are the key names. Emeran 1860 and KG Energo are clients.

Rowan Legal stands out for handling public procurement and concession projects. Vilém Podešva, who has ‘a very good reputation in the industry’, advised water supply company SVS on an operating contract that will take effect after 2020, which included negotiating with Veolia to restructure a joint venture.
