Position

Daphne was called to the Bar in 1979 and took silk in 2010. She acts for and advises employers and employees, specialising in high value and complicated employment law litigation. Over the past five years, Daphne has represented thousands of claimants in equal pay cases. She won a landmark equal pay victory for 900 predominantly female employees employed by Birmingham City Council, the largest Local Authority in Europe (Barker v Birmingham CC), a claim thought to be worth over £100m, and is representing 2500 Birmingham predominantly female employees in challenging the new Single Status job evaluation introduced in April 2008. She also successfully represented 4,000 predominantly female employees of Glasgow City Council (Adam v Glasgow CC) the largest Local Authority in Scotland. She also acted for thousands of female NHS employees in the test claim challenging the new job evaluation scheme, Agenda for Change, (Hartley v Northumbria NHS Trust). Daphne also specialises in discrimination and related claims. She recently represented the University of London in resisting a £2m claim for victimisation; the University of Sheffield in a test case concerning part-time lecturers alleging breaches of the Part Time and Fixed Term Regulations; obtained an injunction restraining the dismissal of a Rabbi in breach of the contractual disciplinary procedure; and acted in a test case to determine whether Administrators are liable for the discriminatory acts of employees of the companies they act for. Daphne undertakes regulatory and disciplinary work, undertaking high-profile cases before the Law Society’s Admissions Committee, the GMC, Standards Boards, the RFU and other professional bodies.
