Position

Richard has a broad practice that covers all aspects of Chambers’ work but with particular expertise in commercial dispute resolution, civil fraud, banking, competition law and EU law. Recent high-profile cases in which Richard has been instructed include multibillion-dollar claims brought by the Libyan Investment Authority, claims brought by Chevron in respect of an alleged $18bn fraud in Ecuador, the trial of the JPMorgan v BVG litigation, involving a CDO transaction worth in excess of $200million; the still on-going Pay TV litigation in which Richard is instructed for the FA Premier League and Ofcom’s investigation into the Premier League’s rights sales; and a number of cases on behalf of Boris Berezovsky, including the litigation against the estate of his former business partner; Richard also specialises in challenging and advising on EU, UK and EU sanctions measures and is currently instructed by more than a dozen banks, companies and individuals to challenge the sanctions imposed upon them both in the EU Courts and the Administrative Court. Of the seven of Richard’s sanctions cases that have reached final determination, six have resulted in the sanctioned person or entity being de-listed.

Publications of note: ‘The New Tribunals Handbook’ (Bloomsbury Professional (2010)) contributing author, ‘Competition Litigation: UK Practice and Procedure’ (OUP (2010)); former visiting tutor in public law at Kings College London and constitutional law at the University of Cambridge; prior to coming to the Bar Richard spent time at Goldman Sachs working in the credit derivative and interest rate swaps documentation team within the operations division.
