Heads up Burges Salmon’s Licensing practice. Advises clients on all issues arising under the Licensing Act 2003 and Gambling Act 2005 as well as a number of other licensing regimes including applications, variations, reviews, contractual drafting and general regulatory compliance issues. Also advises clients on the commercial aspects of event organisation. Clients come from a variety of industry sectors including leisure and tourism, charities, education, transport, retail and real estate development as well as smaller independent operators and private individuals. Work highlights include advising on licensing issues for a globally recognised event, advising on the management of a multi-million pound licensed property portfolio and advising on licensing issues connected with a major group company restructure.


Qualified 2008; associate 2012; senior associate 2014. Secondment to regulatory body (2010-2011).

Burges Salmon LLP provides advice to clients on the management of licence portfolios, including alcohol, gambling, vehicle and caravan site licenses. In addition to ongoing advice, the practice also assists clients in the licensing aspects of transactions, particularly in the hotels sector, as well as deals involving houses in multiple occupation. The practice acts for prominent clients in the South West, such as the University of Bristol, as well as for companies with nationwide portfolios. The team is led by senior associate Joanne Attwood, with fellow senior associate Stephen Lavington also active in this space.

The environment practice at Burges Salmon LLP advises clients across the whole range of environmental matters within real estate, from contaminated land remediation through environmental risk management, liability issues and carbon law. The firm also counts the water sector and decommissioning of power stations amongst its key areas of expertise. Michael Barlow heads the team with expertise that includes water as well as environmental projects and disputes, and energy efficiency. In May 2021, Guy Bastable joined the practice from BCL Solicitors LLP, bringing to bear extensive experience in environmental disputes and prosecutions. Nuclear expert Ian Salter, renewables specialist Ross Fairley, as well as senior associate Joanne Attwood are further key contacts. Former practice head Simon Tilling left the firm in October 2021.
