Position
Partner and Head of the International Injury department, handling a mix of high-value spinal cord, brain, amputee and fatal injury cases. Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) and Risk and Funding Partner.
Julian has a rare dual speciality of acting for clients who have sustained life-changing or fatal injuries in an international context. He has successfully recovered over £140m for clients injured in the UK and across the globe.
Julian acts for claimants who have sustained spinal cord and severe brain injury, amputations, and for the families of fatal accident victims. In addition, Julian specialises in costs, litigation funding, compliance and knowledge management issues.
Julian fought the case of Harding v Wealands up to the House of Lords, who agreed the assessment of damages for this Australian accident should be in accordance with English law. Not only did that lead to Mr Harding recovering £5.5m compensation for his spinal cord injury, it also set a precedent which helped countless others injured in accidents abroad to recover full compensation.
Julian actively lobbies to preserve and enhance the law for those who have suffered life changing injuries, including recent responses to governmental consultations concerning damages, fatal accidents, motor accidents and automated vehicles
Career
Julian joined Stewarts in 2000 and was appointed a partner in 2002. He founded the International Injuries team in 2007 and was appointed the firm’s Compliance Officer for Legal Practice in 2012. He is the Risk and Funding partner which involves developing and implementing improvements to the legal services Stewarts provides to its all of its clients, including innovative cost and funding options.
Memberships
Julian is the Chairman of the Forum of Complex Injuries Solicitors (FOCIS). He is an APIL Fellow and accredited specialist in Spinal Injury and Accidents Abroad. He is also a member of the Law Society PI Panel, ISCOS and PEOPIL.
