Position

Jimmy has more than 20 years of experience in restructuring and insolvency work with KPMG, an international accounting firm. He retired as a partner of KPMG Malaysia in 2015.

Following his retirement, he was invited by the Hong Kong & Singapore leadership of KPMG to help develop a restructuring practice in Jakarta, Indonesia. Having developed the foundation for the restructuring practice, he retired as a partner of KPMG Singapore & Indonesia in 2017.

Jimmy joined the firm as a partner in September 2018. His key practice area is in restructuring and insolvency.

Career

Jimmy has extensive experience in restructuring work having carried out business and financial reviews of distressed companies and played a key role in establishing the business viability of these companies. He also develops restructuring plans, which could be in the form of cash and asset injection, asset sale, operational and balance sheet right-sizing or reverse takeover, secure buy-ins by the stakeholders, and attends to the drafting of term sheets and restructuring agreements.

In terms of insolvency work, Jimmy also has extensive experience in steering the administration of companies through insolvency processes, including companies or businesses that were ongoing, companies or businesses that were not viable and needed to be placed in liquidation, and advising, drafting and executing on options that would optimize returns to the stakeholders.

Jimmy also regularly advises investors on the purchase of impaired loans or non-performing loans, including the due diligence processes and the available recovery options that will optimize returns.

Jimmy regularly gives talks and seminars in the areas of restructuring, insolvency and corporate rescue mechanisms at conferences organized by the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) and International Association of Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Professionals (INSOL). His recent speaking engagements include speaking and presenting insights on the implementation of corporate rescue mechanisms at the SSM National Insolvency Conference 2016, Malaysian Institute of Accountant International Accountants Conference 2017, INSOL International Seminar 2017, SSM National Conference 2018 and INSOL International Seminar 2018.

Jimmy was a member of the Corporate Law Reform Committee, a committee tasked with advising the Government of Malaysia on law reforms relating to restructuring and insolvency from 2000 to 2005, and the recommendations for the rescue mechanism chapters have been incorporated in the Malaysia Companies Act 2016. He is a key member in the founding, and setting up, of the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Malaysia (IPAM) and sat as a council member of IPAM from April 2013 to March 2015.

Education

Jimmy graduated with a B.Sc (Hons) degree in Business Administration majoring in Finance from the University of Wisconsin, USA in 1983.

He completed his LLB (Hons) degree in 1995 and obtained the Malaysian Certificate in Legal Practice in 1998. He was admitted as an advocate & solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in August 2018.

He is a graduate of Chartered Global Management Accountant. He is also a chartered accountant registered with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants.
