Position

Prior to joining Chooi & Company, Yeong Hui was a Partner of another large firm in Malaysia. Before that he practised law in the Singapore office of a global law firm and prior to that he was with one of Singapore’s largest law firms.

Yeong Hui deals with all areas of employment and industrial relations law, including the employment aspects of mergers & acquisitions and restructuring exercises, as well as internal investigations, personal data protection, occupational health & safety and compliance matters.

He also deals with shipping and commodities-related disputes, including disputes relating to charter-parties and bills of lading, marine insurance, shipping casualties, international sale of goods and international commodity and handles related arbitration matters.

Career

Yeong Hui’s practice touches all aspects of Employment and Immigration work.  Among other things, he assists with the following:

  • Advising and representing clients in unfair dismissal claims, trade disputes and suits relating to restrictive covenants.
  • Assisting on employee transfers and advising on reductions of workforce;
  • Drafting employment contracts, employee policies and employee benefit plans and schemes;
  • Assisting in bribery and fraud investigations; and
  • Conducting compliance trainings, developing compliance programmes and providing advice on compliance issues for employers.

He and his team also assist with work pass related matters.

In the field of Maritime and International Trade, Yeong Hui has been involved in arbitrations including under the auspices of the KLRCA, SIAC, LMAA and CIETAC on commodities/trade related disputes. He has also assisted in the arrest and subsequent sale of vessels, bills of lading and charterparties disputes and disputes relating to shipbuilding contract and marine insurance.

Yeong Hui was named as a Dispute Resolution Star in the Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific 2018.

He had authored the Admiralty chapter of the 2018 Reissue of Halsbury’s Laws of Malaysia, Vol 1(1). As a member of the American Bar Association, he has written several articles for the Association’s numerous Sections.

Education

Yeong Hui has qualifications to practise in both Malaysia and Singapore.

A graduate of the University Canterbury, New Zealand with Bachelor of Laws (Hons), Yeong Hui was admitted as an advocate & solicitor of the High Court in Malaya in 2006 and the Supreme Court of Singapore in 2012.
