Career

Michael has fifteen years’ experience advising on cutting edge competition law and investment screening matters including:

  • Major UK and EU antitrust investigations into cartels, bid-rigging and resale price maintenance, as well as novel probes into online and digital platform restrictions which have changed the face of competition law
  • Significant UK, EU and multi-jurisdictional merger cases, at phase 1 and phase 2, many of which have been cleared by way of complex remedy negotiations
  • Investment screening challenges, including a number of the tiny minority of cases called in for an in-depth national security review by the UK Government under the new National Security and Investment Act

Michael’s “big picture” expertise for clients is informed by his experience practising at international law firms in London and Brussels, as well as in Beijing and Shanghai during the nascent Chinese competition law regime. As former in-house antitrust counsel at Diageo plc he advised on global competition issues, including those in developing African jurisdictions, as well as formulating the business’ new global competition law compliance guidelines and online training tools.

He is a regular speaker at competition conferences, including in Cambridge, London, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. He has been published and called on to comment on new competition law developments in publications ranging from Global Competition Review, European Antitrust Review, PLC Magazine, China Daily and China Insight.
