Career

James is a solicitor advocate and has been helping clients for over 20 years'  with commercial disputes in the High Court and Appellate Courts, as well as arbitrations, mediations, completion accounts disputes and expert determinations.  James works with clients in oil and gas, electricity, IT, media, and financial services industries on dispute resolution.

James lectures on a number of legal topics and a co-author of Kendall on Expert Determination (5th Edition).

The IT and telecoms group at Herbert Smith Freehills LLP  is praised for its 'outstanding service and business-focused advice. The practice is acting for the Ministry of Defence on a £1bn IT transformation and re-procurement project. In another highlight, it acted for TSB Bank and Banco de Sabadell on the integration of IT services following the acquisition of the former by the latter banking group. The team has significant telecoms expertise, with clients including Vodafone, Telefónica O2 and TalkTalk. The 'excellent' Nick Pantlin heads the practice, which includes head of TMT M&A Nicholas Moore, IT and outsourcing specialist James Farrell and recently promoted transactional partner David Coulling  (who quickly grasps very technical points of technology law').
