Position

Thijs Straatman is a real estate lawyer specialising in project development, procurement law, state aid law, con­struction law, land exploitation and the purchase of investment properties. In the context of concluding real estate transactions he also advises on public law issues such as zoning plans and licensing procedures, competition law, sureties, financing and issues of company law. He works for municipal councils, develo­pers, housing corporations and care institutions. Thijs specialises in the contracting of large-scale area developments in urban and greenfield locations. The advice he provides covers all aspects of the project, from procurement law through to the public law context created by the Grondexploitatiewet (Land Exploitation Act). Thijs also litigates regularly in procurement disputes and other private law disputes. He is counsel to the municipal councils of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Gouda, Leiden, Alkmaar and Venlo, amongst others.

Career

After completing his studies he worked as a research assistant with Delft University of Technology, as a legal secretary of the Vereniging voor Nederlandse Projectontwikkelingsmaatschappijen (Association of Dutch Project Developers – Neprom) and as a lawyer with Van Wijmen Nouwen in Breda, and joined the real estate section of Houthoff Buruma in Rotterdam in 1999. He founded the law firm Straatman Koster Advocaten with Wilfried Koster in February 2006. Thijs regularly publishes on real estate-related topics and also gives lectures and courses in these fields for Kluwer, the Instituut voor Bouwrecht (Construction Law Institute). Thijs is a lecturer in “Area Development” for the Specialist Course on Spatial Planning and Environmental Law at the Grotius Academy.
