José Manuel Sérvulo Correia develops his legal practice around the areas of Public Law and Litigation and Arbitration.

Career

Founding partner of SÉRVULO, since 1999, and Emeritus Professor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, José Manuel Sérvulo Correia developed his legal practice around the areas of Public Law and Litigation and Arbitration. He is a founding member of the European Public Law Group. In 2015 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Athens. He is member of the Board of Trustees of the European Law and Governance School. He was appointed Full Professor in 2006. He received his PhD in Law from the University of Lisbon in 1987. In 1968 he concluded the Complementary Course in Economic Political Sciences (equivalent to a master’s degree), at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, institution from which he also graduated in 1959. He has been a member of the panel of arbitrators of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (The Hague) since 2005. He was judge ad hoc at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), between 2011 and 2014. He was member of the High Council of the Bar Association, between 2005 and 2007. He headed the legal department and was legal counsel to the management of the Entreposto business group, from 1979 to 1995. He was member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, having participated in the respective Plenary and in the Committees on Social Issues and on Population, Refugees and Migration, between 1977 and 1979. From 1976 to 1979 he was a member of the National Assembly, Vice-President of the Parliamentary Group and President of the Parliamentary Committee on Health and Social Security. In 1976 he was Secretary of State for Emigration, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the VI Provisional Government. He was a lawyer in the legal department of the Bank of Portugal between 1972 and 1976, and in 1979. He joined the Bar Association in 1962.
