Michael Honiball is a director of Werksmans and heads up the firm’s International Tax Practice. With extensive international and corporate tax advisory experience, Michael has a wide portfolio of both corporate and high net wealth individual clients. He is an expert in international tax and transfer pricing. He also has extensive experience in cross border mergers and acquisitions, trust taxation, exchange control and setting up hedge funds and private equity funds offshore.


Michael joined Werksmans in February 2015 as a director and head of international tax, which he currently still is. Prior to joining Werksmans, he was a partner at Webber Wentzel, where he headed up the International Tax Team. Before that, he was a Director at KPMG South Africa, where he headed up the International Tax Department, and subsequently the Transfer Pricing Department. Michael is a Professor at the University of Johannesburg, where he lectures in tax law and transfer pricing. Michael has been named as a ranked lawyer in tax by Chambers Global for the past three years. He has also been named as a recommended lawyer in tax in Legal 500 Europe, Middle East & Africa for 2014 and as a legal expert from 2012 to 2013. Michael has also been named by Legal Experts EMEA as an expert in his field from 2012 to 2013. He has also been nominated several times to appear in the Guide to World’s Leading Tax Advisers and in the Guide to the World’s Leading Transfer Pricing Advisers as one of the most pre eminent practitioners in his field. Michael is the co author of two tax textbooks and has written numerous articles on the topics of the taxation of trusts and international tax within the South African context.


Michael is an admitted attorney and conveyancer of the High Court of South Africa and a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales. Furthermore, Michael is a member of the Executive of the International Fiscal Association (SA Branch), a Master Tax Practitioner (SAIT), a member of the Law Society of England and Wales, and an Academician of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law (TIAETL).


Michael completed BA and LLB degrees at Stellenbosch University as well as an LLM degree, a higher Diploma in Tax Law and a Corporate Law Diploma, with distinction, at Rand Afrikaans University.
