Career

Peter van Hagen has been a partner at Hertoghs advocaten for many years and is responsible for handling tax penalty procedures and criminal litigation, as well as recovery cases. Peter works from our office in Rotterdam, where he focuses on criminal customs law and penalties relating to customs and excise duties.

“I see the effect that being regarded as a susprect by the anti-fraud agency FIOD has on clients, and also the huge tax assessments, requests for payment and fines they can receive. My task as an attorney is to provide them with legal protection against tax and customs authorities. By forcefully arguing your case, but also by skilfully manoeuvring.”

Peter gives regular guest tutorials and lectures on criminal tax and customs law and tax collection. He is a member (and sometimes former board member) of the Dutch Tax Attorneys Association (NVAB), the Dutch Association of Defence Counsel (NVSA), the International Bar Association and the European Criminal Bar Association.

Peter studied Dutch law at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and subsequently completed a doctorate in taxation at Tilburg University. Since then he has been a specialised tax attorney.
