Appleby has a strong record advising clients on loan agreements and security documents, leasing issues, and the sale and acquisition of vessels. A team led by practice head Faye Moffett and including counsel Andrew Webb and associate Alexandra Dernie recently acted for a major global bank on the financing of the purchase of an Isle of Man-registered aircraft; counsel Robyn Wood assisted a bank with the ship security and registry issues arising from its merger with a number of its subsidiaries. Notable clients include BNP Paribas, ALM Jet and Bank of Ireland. Senior associate Eleanor Harding is a key name to note within the team.

Cains’ Garry Manley acted as sole Isle of Man counsel to a group of banks in the assignment of a ship financing loan, and of counsel Steven Quayle is currently advising an airline on the delivery of 12 new passenger aircraft vessels. A global shipping company appointed the group to oversee the shipping issues – including loan and security arrangements, potential repossessions and the sale of profitable assets – arising from the insolvency of a number of its subsidiaries. Alongside a number of vessel acquisition financing transactions and asset repossessions, the team also oversaw the partial de-syndication of a high-value loan facility to an Isle of Man-based borrower group on behalf of a European bank, with the support of associate Mary-Louise Buxton.

Clients such as Ryanair, Bank of America and Seven Mile Shipping retain DQ’s ‘helpful and prompt’ team to advise on a wide range of mandates. On the aviation side, clients recommend corporate and commercial practice head Stephen Dougherty for his ‘detailed knowledge of the Isle of Man legislation’ and ‘genuine desire to help clients’. Among his recent highlights feature a number of aircraft and helicopter acquisitions. For shipping work, clients can rely on managing partner Mark Dougherty, who is currently assisting Credit Agricole and Sumitomo Mitsui with its Sea Bridge joint venture, which is designed to invest up to $1bn in senior secure ship mortgage loans. Associate director Donna Matthews is also a key contact for financing work in the context of facility restructurings and loan refinancings.

Simcocks fields a shipping offering with experience in the cross-border acquisition and disposal of vessels, financing of shipping companies and buildings, litigation, and matters relating to 'super' or 'mega' yachts. On the aviation side, clients engage the group to advise on aircraft leasing and mortgages, security law documentation and financing transactions. The names to note are Amy Coole, Irini Newby and Elizabeth Simpson.
