Position

Commercial arbitration; extensive experience in litigation and arbitration for 40 years, latterly specialising in aviation, commercial, commodities, construction, entertainment and pharmaceutical work; acted in numerous domestic and international commercial and construction disputes; member of English Working Party on the 1998 ICC Arbitration Rules. Appointed as arbitrator by ICC, AAA/ICDR, LCIA, GAFTA, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Hungarian Court of Arbitration and as mediator by the AAA. On the International Arbitration Panels of ICDR (the International Centre for Dispute Resolution in New York), and KLRCA (the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration). Over 140 arbitration awards issued since joining Littleton Chambers in January 2000. As well as conducting general commercial arbitrations, has conducted arbitrations in the aviation, commodities, construction, energy, information technology, maritime, pharmaceutical, telecommunications and water industries.

Career

Barrister-at-law (Midland and Oxford Circuit) Francis Taylor Building, The Temple, London 1964-75; US attorney and counsellor-at-law (formerly an associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York) 1975-76; solicitor of Supreme Court (formerly a partner of Richards Butler in London) 1977-99; arbitrator and mediator in Littleton Chambers 2000 to date. Formerly a member of the House of Lords Select Committee on the European Communities and a member of the Houses of Parliament Joint Committee on Consolidation Bills. For over 20 years actively involved in House of Lords in the reform of English arbitration law. Participated in committee in House of Lords in numerous public bills including the Arbitration Bill 1979, the Financial Services Bill 1986, the Latent Damage Bill 1986, the Competition and Services Bill 1992, the Civil Aviation [Amendment] Bill 1996, the Arbitration Bill 1996, the Access to Justice Bill 1999 and the Contracts [Rights of Third Parties] Bill 1999. Served in Royal Navy Reserve 1954-1964; in active service in Royal Navy 1956-1958; retired in rank of Lieutenant RNR; Freeman of the City of London; president of the Civil Court Users Association; observer of the IBA Human Rights Institute at the trial of Chief Justice of Gibraltar (November 2001); member of the Pilgrims.
