Abai has been active advising clients throughout Kazakhstan and the CIS for more than 20 years. His primary practice areas are banking/finance and M&A. Abai’s work extends to advising on multilateral institution financing, structuring of transactions (including those related to Islamic finance), foreign investment and various corporate matters related to investing and doing business in Kazakhstan.
Abai is a regular speaker at conferences and is a contributing author to many local and international legal and business publications.

Dentons provides advice to clients on all aspects of construction work ranging from initial land use, planning and zoning matters to construction, financing, and development management work. The practice also handles regulatory and permitting issues relating to airport, road and motorway projects. Based in Nur-Sultan, practice head Birzhan Zharasbayev has experience in advising major companies on FIDIC and EPC contracts, and has acted on several major infrastructure and development projects. Abai Shaikenov primarily focuses on banking and finance, M&A and real estate mandates; senior associate Ruslan Nurbekov specialises in M&A and general corporate and commercial issues; and Bogdan Piskorskiy focuses on real estate and construction work, infrastructure projects and PPPs.
With extensive experience and ‘strong skills‘ in corporate and M&A, Dentons covers a broad spectrum of corporate issues and deals in Kazakhstan including cross-border foreign investment deals. Practice co-head Abai Shaikenov handles complex finance and M&A transactions in Kazakhstan, and recently advised on the financial restructuring of RBK Bank. Co-head Aigoul Kenjebayeva has notable experience dealing with the legal aspects and tax implications of investing in Kazakhstan, while Victoria Simonova advises on energy, corporate, construction and subsurface use mandates. Counsel Gani Ashimkhan is ‘very helpful‘ and focuses on foreign investment issues, cross-border M&A and general corporate transactions.
Dentons is noted for its work advising local and international financial institutions and large corporations on complex syndicated bank lending, asset finance, capital markets, structured finance and Islamic finance mandates. The practice also has experience in cross-border transactions and regularly acts for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and Citibank. Group head Abai Shaikenov actively advises clients in Kazakhstan and focuses on M&A and general corporate transactions including cross-border acquisitions and disposals, privatisations and corporate financing transactions.
