DWF's ‘excellent EU and competition practice’ stands out for its EU State aid expertise; it is also adept at handling EU procurement and EU funding regulatory issues and regularly advises on cartels and mergers, benefiting from close ties with the firm’s Brussels office. Recent highlights include advising Mexichem UK and Mexichem Group on an ongoing European Commission investigation into alleged anti-competitive behaviour by  Honeywell and DuPont concerning automotive refrigerants; advising the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council, in relation to particular grants to a venue in the North East for the delivery of a culture and visitor centre, in the context of a European Commission investigation; and advising Birmingham City Council and Birmingham Finance in relation to the £300m AMSCI fund for supporting supply chain manufacturing and engineering companies across England.  The team is also advising Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (LCRCA) on the administration of the Single Investment fund (SIF), a major new grant fund run across Merseyside. Team head Jonathan Branton splits his time between Manchester and Leeds and is ‘an expert competition lawyer, with particular expertise in EU state aid law’. ‘Knowledgeable’ senior associate Jay Mehta is also noted for state aid matters.

DWF's team advises more than 200 local authorities and other public sector bodies. Colin Murray  ‘works to a very high standard’. Murray is best known for his work on complex regeneration projects. James Lupton  produces ‘good quality work’ and advises local authorities on a broad range of matters ranging from contracting strategies and procurement processes to restructuring major projects relating to schools, highways, waste, housing and police projects. Jonathan Branton and senior associate Jay Mehta  ‘both carry a high degree of specialist knowledge and adopt a solutions-focused and flexible approach’. It advises Stockport MBC on a wide range of issues such as advising it on the closure of a number of leisure centres and the opening of some new ones. It has also advised Wirral MBC on the delivery of the Golf Project with the Jack Nicklaus consortium to deliver two new golf courses, a hotel, new homes and a new link road. Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority, Manchester City Council/Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Liverpool City Council are other major clients. It has also advised a number of companies in the private sector on their bids to local authorities.

DWF’s ‘top-tier practice’ is led by ‘star performerJonathan Branton, who splits his time between Leeds and Manchester and is ‘one of the foremost experts nationally for state aid and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) advice’. Branton ‘provides technically sound and pragmatic, solution-based advice’; he recently represented Mexichem Group in an European Commission (EC) investigation into alleged anti-competitive behaviour between two US automotive refrigerant companies, assisted Cornwall Council with the state aid funding for the Space Port and Newquay Airport, and acted for Dransfield Properties on two major development projects including ERDF funding support. Other work includes advising East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hull City Council on investments in the Green Port area and related state aid rules, and handling funding matters for Leeds City Region LEP. The practice is also highly regarded for its public procurement expertise. The group works closely with senior associate Jay Mehta who is based in Manchester and Brussels-based Vassilis Akritidis.
