Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

We have a firm-wide target to focus on diversity and inclusion. We are fully committed to eliminating unfair discrimination, and we see the value that a diverse workforce brings to the firm. We have an EDI policy that covers all protected characteristics and works to value meritocracy, openness, fairness and transparency. The policy applies to all employees, agency staff,  clients,  communities,  suppliers and consultants, whether permanent or temporary.

In 2021, the firm’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion steering group was established. Nine individuals from different levels within the business, ethnicities, and backgrounds run the group.

The committee has rolled out internal communications to educate colleagues on the value and importance of using inclusive language to showcase a welcoming and safe environment by including pronouns on email signatures and on our intranet. The group hosts various staff events to celebrate awareness days and religious holidays and offers a platform for people to voice their opinions or bring forward their ideas on the firm’s initiatives.

With colleagues from a range of backgrounds and beliefs across the firm, the ED&I committee has done the groundwork to educate before implementing.

Sustainability

Slater Heelis is an accredited Living Wage Foundation Employer, and with regards to the business’ impact on the environment, we are committed, amongst other initiatives, to:

  • efficient printing
  • reducing the amount of waste produced by the business
  • ensuring that water/electricity is used responsibly by our staff
  • recycling materials as extensively as possible
  • using technology to lessen the need for travel
  • the promotion of agile working to reduce our carbon footprint

Supporting the LGBT Community & Pro Bono

We work with the LGBT Foundation, offering pro bono advice to its service users and through our colleagues who take part in the Pride in Practice Training Academy. This helps our staff truly become LGBT+ allies, including asking LGBTQ+ inclusive questions and understanding discrimination. At Slater Heelis, we have seven LGBT Champions. These are our colleagues who have completed the Pride in Practice training, which required them to complete ten training programme modules with up to 20 hours of learning and development.

We work closely with Switchboard, a national LGBTQ+ support helpline, to assist their service users in accessing the support they need.

Our history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community and initiatives dates back decades. We have participated in Pride and were the only law firm in Manchester to hold an information evening in the Manchester Village about the Civil Partnership Act before it was introduced in 2005.

CLIENT: Chris
TESTIMONIAL: Life changing advice

Charlotte is possibly one of the most competent people I’ve ever met. Prepared, efficient, to-the-point, clear, concise, able to adjust and switch context without hestiation. I’m so fortunate to have had Charlotte on my side.

An hour of Charlotte’s time and expert advice was the difference between not reaching an agreement in my divorce and achieving an amicable outcome that has:
– Avoided court and extensive legal fees
– Resulted in the best possible outcome for my three young children
– Ensured both my ex-wife and I can rebuild our lives and have what we need

Charlotte’s ability to cite case law and speak to similar cases that she has handled personally is nothing short of impressive.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Charlotte to anyone seeking family law or divorce legal advice.

Going through bereavement was hard, but Ali and Slater Heelis managed to handle most of the affairs re the application of probate and helping to guide me through my responsibilities as an executor of the will. The process was smooth and efficient. I felt I was taken care of with great skill, professionalism and understanding. Would highly recommend Ali and request further legal services again in the future when necessary.

TESTIMONIAL: I have been incredibly fortunate to have Alexandra Goldrein acting as my lawyer. Divorce is never going to be easy, and being in lockdown/the pandemic added to the difficulty. Alex was a tower of strength and support to me during this time, and I genuinely would have struggled without her help.

Alex is razor sharp. She is a tactically astute family lawyer with incredible skill, gaining insight into your particular situation very quickly. Alex always acts with total professionalism and empathy. She is on the ball, very down to earth, and is one of the most genuinely caring people I have come across.

Alexandra Goldrein works tirelessly at a level way beyond her grade and is more than a match for anyone she comes up against – I would absolutely recommend her to anyone going through divorce, you will be in safe, skilled and supportive hands.

TESTIMONIAL: Divorce, conveyancing and wills

Thanks to an extremely contentious and unpleasant divorce, I needed a lot of help and guidance from Heather. She helped me navigate the process and supported me throughout. I can’t thank her enough.

Zara handled the house sale, which again was more complicated and protracted than it needed to be, but she kept all parties on track.

Finally, Paul helped me set up my new will, so that I feel settled about the future. Huge thanks to you all.

TESTIMONIAL: You might think this review is fake because of how positive it is but I can assure you it’s not and it’s as genuine as it gets ! I’m only so passionate about this because I understand how it feels as a dad to be alienated from your child when you’ve done nothing wrong and you hit rock bottom so I’d like anyone seeing this that’s in a similar position to really listen.

I was panicking because I had just gotten rid of my old solicitor a week before my first court date in regards to contact with my son and Alexandra reached out to me after an enquiry.

I cannot stress that Alexandra had a week or so to get everything done that my previous solicitor at Harold G Walker had done poorly. Alexandra provided everything to a high quality along with providing me with what I believe the most important thing, honesty.

She also made me understand exactly where I stood and what I should do next etc and not only did it pay off but it actually made me understand exactly what’s going on and for someone who has no knowledge of this prior it was pretty clear. Alexandra provided me with amazing communication and didn’t just view me as a money making scheme but as a human being going through genuine problems, this was reflected through her care when it came to approaching me with discussing finances and discussing the ongoing situation. I would definitely recommend her to anyone going through legal family troubles especially if you’re someone who is innocent and is being taken advantage of especially and in addition if you have the finances because she is definitely one of the very best you’ll find.

TESTIMONIAL: Being the first time I found myself in a situation where I needed a legal solicitor to deal with a personal private matter, I could have not asked for a better person to represent me and help me throughout the all process.

I was fortunate to come across Rachel who from the first contact immediately put my mind a rest by conveying confidence, knowledge and reassurance.

Once I was able to describe the situation to Rachel she immediatly started all diligences to ensure all work was done before I attended my interview.

On the interview day she was by my side and delivered an excellent defence statement which ultimately together with my account ensured the right outcome was achieve and justice prevailed.

Rachel helped me more than I can honestly say. She supported me throughout the process and help me in such a way that without her I am unsure how I would have coped mentally with the pressure of such situation.

I highly recommend Rachels services as she could not done better for me. Rachel is reassuring, has a vast amount of knowledge, is supportive, honest and very approachable.

Thank you Rachel

TESTIMONIAL: DBS

I have never used a solicitor before and I was very wary of who I should use and if it would cost me a fortune. I have to say I was more than impressed from the service that I received from Rachel. It was a very sensitive issue and she showed empathy and support throughout keeping me fully informed every step of the journey. She showed no judgement and made me feel at ease throughout. Every time I contacted her it was never too much trouble to speak to me and show empathy. The cost was more than value for money especially when other solicitors were charging ridiculous prices for a service. I would 100% recommend Rachel and SlaterHeelis. You not only achieved a positive outcome but also gave me my life back. Thank you

TESTIMONIAL: Rebecca dealt with a financial dispute which arose when I separated from my partner of 14 years. Whilst I was optimistic of the outcome being in my favour, there were still huge doubts and legal implications which didn’t go in my favour. After the first meeting with Rebecca, I was made aware of the various options available to me & also the implications of each. At no point did Rebecca make any promises or guarantees so I was prepared for every eventuality.

I found Rebecca very professional & knowledgeable from the outset & It was clear that she was quite tenacious.

She kept me informed at all times and the way her correspondence was worded with the opposing solicitor was very impressive.

The outcome worked entirely in my favour and this was all down to Rebecca. She is someone who I trusted from the start, she didn’t judge & these things are all very important. I would not hesitate to use Rebecca again at any time in the future. She is a huge asset to her company.

TESTIMONIAL: Hannah Costley- highly recommended

I recently engaged Hannah Costley after being asked to attend a voluntary police interview. Having never been in trouble of any kind before I was incredibly distressed, Hannah recognised this and was proactive in immediately making contact with the police and taking as much of the stress away as she could. Hannah was understanding, compassionate and most importantly she listened to me. Her advice was broken down in a clear and concise way so that I had a clear understanding of next steps and she kept me fully up to date with where things were upto. Thankfully and no doubt thanks to Hannah’s representations the matter was closed hours after my interview however Hannah continued to advocate for me after the fact when the police tried to impose unfair conditions. When already in a very distressing situation it can feel even more overwhelming having to reach out to a legal representative for help for fear of being judged however I can assure anyone finding themselves in a similar situation to the one I was in, after just the first few minutes of speaking with Hannah you will feel completely supported and the burden will feel less! I can’t thank you or recommend you enough Hannah!

TESTIMONIAL: First-class service

Lauren provided a first-class service to assist with making and submitting a claim against a company that had not provided the service I had paid for. From making and serving the claim through to the Default Judgement being awarded, I was at all times kept fully informed of where things were up to and more importantly what my options were going forward. All of Lauren’s communications were very clear and thorough, and I always received very helpful and informative responses to any questions I had. Lauren was careful to warn me of the risks of accruing more legal fees than would have been wise, given we were dealing with a company that may have been unable to pay. I am grateful for all of Lauren’s assistance with this case and would not hesitate in recommending her to anyone in need of legal assistance with dispute resolution.
