Shipping Tier 2

Co-headed from Hong Kong by Steven Wise and Andrew Horton, and benefiting from the ability to draw upon the expertise of lawyers based on the ground in mainland China and Singapore, CMS provides an integrated service to a range of shipping stakeholders, including P&I clubs, owners and charterers. Although the team has capability across the bandwidth of dry and wet litigation, it is perhaps best-known for its ship arrest prowess, and benefits from many years' experience negotiating security guarantees and bail bonds, as well as taking action to obtain security for claims in many other jurisdictions, via arrest or similar proceedings. Senior associate John Butler continues to develop a strong practice across a range of shipping-related international arbitration and commercial disputes.

Dispute resolution: international arbitration Tier 4

At CMS, Nicolas Wiegand leads the arbitration practice. Arbitrations regarding investment and shipping disputes are core strengths of the practice; Mariel Dimsey is well versed in the former area, and is equally adept at advising on commercial-related disputes. Andrew Horton is a key contact for shipping-related disputes. In April 2020 Sherlin Tung joined Withers as partner.

Asset finance (including aviation and shipping finance)

Although CMS' Hong Kong asset finance team remains relatively compact, under the guidance of Tim Elliott, since its establishment in January 2017, it has continued to increase its market penetration for local lessors and owners, as well as advising international entities on mandates with an Asia Pacific nexus. Elliot splits his time between the local office and London, and indeed a significant proportion of the work handled by the team involves a collaborative effort between offices. Although it does handle some traditional shipping finance work, the team's sweet-spot lies in relation to the financing of complicated energy and offshore-related vessels, including LNG carriers and floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units.
