Career

Leonard Böhmer specialises in insurance law, transport law and risk management. In particular, he advises national and international companies in insurance and other industries on risk management issues.

Leonard is head of the Litigation & Insurance Practice Group. He is a member of the advisory committee on civil procedures of the Netherlands Bar Association. He contributed to the Dutch chapter of Lord Justice Jackson’s preliminary report on costs.

Leonard is a lecturer for a number of postgraduate courses, and a regular speaker at seminars and conferences in the Netherlands and abroad. He is a former Dean of the Bar Association in the District of Utrecht and has been a member of the board of the Netherlands Bar Association.

CMS‘ insurance practice handles a spectrum of multi-jurisdictional matters, working closely with the firm’s London office to tackle both advisory coverage and regulatory matters, as well as disputes concerning D&O, product and professional indemnity, with a growing focus on the burgeoning area of cyber liability. Leading the team are Bas Baks, who focuses on construction-based claims, D&O matters and financial lines coverage, and Leonard Böhmer, who represents Dutch and international clients in a broad variety of insurance-related litigation. Oskar van de Weijer is also sought after for his experience in D&O, W&I and professional indemnity claims.

Netherlands > Dispute resolution: Commercial litigation

As a part of CMS‘s pan-European dispute resolution team, the practice is skilled at handling multi-jurisdictional cases, especially within the ESG space. The team is split into domestic and international groups and takes a sector-focused approach, specialising in banking, insurance, real estate, and energy. Leonard Böhmer leads the litigation and insurance team with Peter Soede, who focuses on liability law. ESG task force head Aukje Haan handles related litigation and mediation. Bart-Adriaan de Ruijter chairs the corporate litigation and arbitration practice and regularly represents multinationals in corporate disputes. Petra Heemskerk is sought out for her public law litigation expertise, while Anita Canta handles franchising disputes. Andries Polkerman and Simon Polkerman both joined from De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek in March 2023, strengthening the practice’s commercial litigation capabilities.
