Lawyer Rankings

Colombia > Competition and antitrust

Led by Ximena Zuleta, who also leads the office’s dispute resolution department, Dentons Cardenas & Cardenas’ practice group handles the full spectrum of competition and antitrust law. The practice welcomed experienced associate Carlos Ignacio Arboleda from Brigard Urrutia in October 2018, but lost senior associate Ana María Ortegón, who departed in April 2019. A healthy caseload saw the team advise Mexichem on the merger control procedure triggered by its $1.5bn acquisition of an 80 percent stake in Israeli irrigation firm Netafim; the firm is also currently acting in a highly significant SIC bid-rigging investigation. Senior partners Eduardo Cárdenas and Bernardo Cárdenas are also active in the field.

Colombia > Dispute resolution > Arbitration

Dentons Cardenas & Cardenas enters the rankings on the back of recently gained experience in both domestic and international arbitration and excellent client feedback. Practice head Ximena Zuleta successfully represented a construction company in ICC arbitration initiated on the grounds of breach of contract by a contractor hired for the construction of major works. Other highlights included successfully acting in a domestic arbitration which had paralysed a project on the land in dispute; the arbitral tribunal dismissed the claimant’s request. Senior associate Paula Vejarano is also recommended.

Colombia > Dispute resolution > Litigation

Dentons Cardenas & Cardenas has the ability ‘to deal with high-complexity issues with a fast-response service’, with the team getting ‘deeply involved in the cases’ so as to ‘clearly understand the position’ of the clients. Ximena Zuleta, who also heads the competition and antitrust area, leads the seven-strong practice; senior associate Paula Vejarano is also a key practice group member. Additional support comes from highly regarded corporate practice head Eduardo Cárdenas, who is leading the advice to a major multinational regarding a domestic civil lawsuit initiated by a local dealer that claims the existence of a commercial agency relationship and is seeking damages for the alleged undue termination of a distribution agreement. Other highlights included acting for a client against a governmental entity which claims a breach and undue termination of contract. ExxonMobil, Acciona, Morgan Stanley and ZF Group are active clients.

Colombia > Projects

Advising throughout the entire lifecycle of projects, Dentons Cardenas & Cardenas primarily acts on behalf of major international clients, assisting them particularly with governmental procurement matters. With over 25 years’ experience in the area, Ximena Zuleta heads a 12-strong team, in which senior partner Bernardo Cárdenas and energy experts Jorge Neher, Hernán Rodríguez and Santiago González are all active. The practice is currently advising a multinational motor company in a public tender process in Bogotá, as well as representing two construction companies in a dispute with a state entity regarding an infrastructure development project. Other 2018 mandates included advising an investment group interested in the acquisition of the shares of a 4G road project concessionaire.
