Career

Márcio Chaves is the partner in charge of the Digital Law field of Almeida Advogados, with 20 years of legal experience, in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte.

Head of the operation responsible for digital compliance projects including data protection regulations, especially the Brazilian General Data Protection Law – LGPD, and the European rule on which it was inspired, the General Data Protection Regulation – GDPR. He has worked on more than 200 digital compliance projects, including the Brazilian Internet Bill of Rights, the E-Commerce Regulation, national and international Intellectual Property legislation with emphasis on software protection, electronic contracts, artificial intelligence, as well as cybersecurity sector regulations, helping hundreds of companies, from technology startups to multinationals, to implement digital innovation in their businesses. He is currently a partner at Almeida Advogados, for whom he had worked from 2008 to 2014 and has been working since 2020.

He has worked as academic coordinator and professor in the MBAs in Privacy and Data Protection, Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC), and Counsel training at Centro de Estudos em Direito e Negócios (CEDIN), the LL.M. in Law and Technology at Fundação Getúlio Vargas – FGV-Rio, the MBA courses in Information Security at Centro Universitário UNA, Innovation Management and Digital Law at FIA Business School, and in training courses for Data Protection Officer (DPO) at FIA Business School at INFI FEBRABAN.

His academic work also includes co-authoring four books: WIPO IP Research Papers (World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Academy, 2010), Direito Digital Aplicado 2.0 (RT, 2016), Direito Digital Aplicado 3.0 (RT, 2018), Direito Digital Aplicado 4.0 (RT, 2020) and Ensaios de Direito Corporativo (2023).

Education

Márcio holds an LL.B (2005) from Faculdade de Direito Milton Campos and an LL.M (2010) in Intellectual Property from the World Intellectual Property Organization WIPO, Geneva/Switzerland and Università Degli Studi di Torino, Turin/Italy. He also has a degree in Advanced Copyright from the World Intellectual Property Organization WIPO Academy (Geneva/Switzerland) (2008), in Media Law from Fundação Getúlio Vargas Law School (2008), and in Computer Law from PUC Minas Law School (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) (2003). He is an accredited Trainer in Privacy and Data Protection at EXIN (Netherlands) as well (2020).
