What makes us different?
What differentiates Akin is its culture that ensures all employees feel like an important and included part of the work place as well as its proven unwavering support of its employees and commitment to diversity & inclusion, work/life balance and pro bono efforts. Since its founding in 1945, the firm has woven a “people first” thread throughout.
Specific initiatives and programming that exemplify Akin ’s culture include the following:
Diversity and Inclusion
At Akin, we believe the various perspectives and experiences of our lawyers and staff help us achieve exceptional results for our clients and bring important insights into all aspects of the firm.

Firmwide Resource Group
Our firm sponsors seven firmwide resource groups (FRG) for lawyers and staff focused on Abilities, Asian, Black, Latinx, LGBTQ+, Parents/Caregivers, and Women. These FRGs complement the firm’s efforts related to recruiting, professional development, and fostering inclusive workplaces. They are voluntary and open to all attorneys and staff.
Local Diversity and Inclusion Councils
Akin has a firmwide Diversity and Inclusion Council to guide the execution of the firm’s diversity and inclusion strategy. We also have local diversity and inclusion councils in each U.S. office, and London. Diversity and inclusion councils offer lawyers and staff a chance to communicate ideas to firm management and to recommend additional initiatives to enhance diversity and inclusion at the firm.
Family Friendly Policies
At Akin, we support lawyers through policies and programmes that enable them to effectively manage and integrate work, family, and other responsibilities. The firm has a Reduced Work Schedule Policy, which allows lawyers to work reduced schedules and remain on partnership track. In particular, we have a significant track record of promotions of women who have availed themselves of the policy.
We also have an Agile Work Programme that recognises that agile work arrangements play an important role in providing excellent client service at the highest levels while also providing flexibility for our lawyers.
The firm works with Bright Horizon’s Family Solutions to offer our employees care for children and dependent adults.
Meeting Our Employees Where They Are
Akin has recently made significant enhancements to its overall health and well-being program by developing new and innovative initiatives that have created an environment and culture that recognize, reward and retain the firm’s top talent and attract high-potential employees to the firm.
The firm also understands the importance of a healthy work-life balance and provide flexible work arrangement policies for its lawyers and business services employees in which employees can explore flexible work options such as flexible/reduced hours and telecommuting arrangements, along with technology resources for colleagues who work remotely.
Understanding the importance of a healthy work-life balance, Akin has designed and implemented innovative programs including:
Be Well: The firm’s groundbreaking and award winning platform – a comprehensive, holistic and interactive well-being program that stands out in the industry. Akin is one of very few global law firms to offer such a firmwide wellness platform and have a dedicated employee to manage it.
AkinJump!: Allows third-year+ associates and counsel to spend time in offices other than their own in order to help advance career development by meeting onsite with clients whom they frequently work, networking with lawyers in that office and gaining a sense for the work environment in Akin locations around the world.
Be Balanced: A free, voluntary and confidential consultation program with a licensed professional counselor to improve work/life integration, increase resiliency and reduce stress.
Akin understands the importance of attracting and retaining elite talent at all levels, and has pioneered talent recruitment and retention approaches that allow it to meet its goal of being an “employer of choice” for all of its employees and a top-tier option for prospective candidates.
Pro bono
Akin has a decades-long, unequivocal commitment in providing a voice – and legal strategy – for clients without the ability to pay. The firm’s dedicated pro bono practice leverages the talent, experience and passions of all members of the firm to advocate for those who are endangered.
The firm’s pro bono clients include asylum applicants fleeing persecution, women seeking refuge from domestic violence, U.S. armed services veterans fighting for health benefits, tenants facing eviction and students aspiring to better educational opportunities. Akin’s pro bono matters include public interest litigation, legislative counselling, poverty law and transactions, in each of Akin’s offices. The firm also deploys our lauded public law and policy team to advance causes around equal access to the legal system, community development and the rule of law.
Akin is a charter signatory to the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, committing us to devote at least at least 60 pro bono hours per lawyer per year. In recent years our attorneys gave more than 100 hours per year to pro bono matters, on average. Our pro bono program’s rewards to our lawyers—especially younger practitioners who get a chance to cut their teeth on important matters—are more than matched by its enormous impact on our clients’ lives.
The firm is also focused on leveraging our tremendous pro bono commitment to address injustice and pursue equality throughout our communities.

Global Reach
India:
Akin has built a distinguished reputation as a trusted ally and key player in the India funds market. For more than two decades, our lawyers have helped clients launch over 100 India-focused funds.
We understand the complex legal, financial and commercial landscapes that define the India funds market. We deliver real-time insights into current fund terms, market practices and investor expectations. Akin advises on funds domiciled in Singapore, Mauritius, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), the Cayman Islands and other jurisdictions.
Our lawyers regularly engage with prominent institutional investors in India, gaining a nuanced understanding of their core concerns and strategies. This knowledge allows us to provide effective and dependable counsel to clients on negotiation and other strategies, ensuring their interests are protected.
Akin works on a wide range of India strategies: private equity, long-only, credit, special situations, real estate and venture capital (VC).
We are proud of our enduring relationships with numerous India fund sponsors, many of whom have trusted us with their fund launches for more than a decade. These relationships underscore our commitment to client service and our ability to consistently deliver results that surpass expectations.
Akin boasts substantial credibility in the international business and investor communities with our understanding of the complexities of doing business in India, including the interplay between government and business on legal, regulatory and tax matters.
We are actively engaged with the USA-India Chamber of Commerce (USAIC) and frequently travel to India to meet with government and commercial leaders. We do not practice Indian law. We work in close conjunction with India’s leading law firms, leveraging our strong relationships to identify optimal local counsel for our clients’ transactions.
Latin America:
Latin America presents a dynamic market as different jurisdictions restructure their economies, revamp their industries and facilitate foreign investment in virtually all business and government sectors.
The region plays a key role in the provision of food, energy and biodiversity to tackle the world’s increasing necessities. Green growth and energy transition present a unique opportunity for Latin America as it contributes a small portion of global greenhouse gas emissions and has enormous green comparative advantages.
For more than 75 years, Akin has been at the forefront of representing global industry leaders, sponsors, financial institutions, and public and private companies in Latin American cross-border engagements.
Our team also represents and advises Latin America-based companies and governments trying to access global markets, attract international funding and incorporate best practices into their industries.
From Mexico to Argentina and throughout the Caribbean, we assist clients by providing top legal and policy counsel through our globally integrated transactional, restructuring, regulatory, policy and dispute resolution practices.
Our lawyers and advisors have exceptional insight into how business is conducted in Latin America. Our practice consists of an international team of lawyers and advisors based across the globe, and especially in our New York, Washington, D.C., Houston and London offices.
Our lawyers possess an understanding of the Latin American legal systems and culture, and our practice is supported by numerous multilingual lawyers throughout our offices, which we believe is essential to providing more efficient and exceptional service.
Africa:
Akin lawyers have a generation of experience working and living in Africa. The firm has undertaken sophisticated projects in all corners of the continent and understand the challenges associated with doing business in complex economic and political environments.
Lawyers in our Africa practice have negotiated deals in many individual countries in North Africa, Francophone Africa and the Sub-Sahara states. The firm has long-term relationships with key financial institutions in the African market. Akin’s role is to help our clients achieve their business goals, while offering the most competent and thorough representation possible.
