Career

Aaron Hunter is a Toronto-based partner in Gowling WLG’s Infrastructure and Construction Group.

Aaron has extensive experience in structuring, drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts, with a focus on the development of major capital projects. With respect to mining, sustainable energy, conventional construction and infrastructure projects, Aaron helps owners, contractors, suppliers and other stakeholders navigate critical procurement processes for the following:

  • engineering and construction services, including EPC and EPCM engagements
  • other professional and technical services
  • design and fabrication of custom equipment
  • hazardous and regulated materials
  • transportation and logistics
  • digital twin technology and other software solutions
  • mobile fleet, including maintenance, repair and spare parts
  • government and community relations
  • operation and maintenance of facilities

Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Aaron served as in-house counsel at two global engineering firms and in a hybrid legal and business role at a large Canadian mining company with assets in North America, South America and Africa. In these roles, Aaron developed significant experience in the following areas:

  • understanding and meeting the challenges that arise when executing projects in remote areas with limited local resources and harsh physical conditions
  • supply chain best practices, policy development, risk management and integrity matters
  • licensing of industrial processes
  • structuring strategic relationships for the development and commercialization of new technologies, including battery recycling, small modular reactors and fusion power
  • designing and implementing amicable settlements of high-value claims
  • helping project leadership teams manage changes in scope, funding and government policy, as well as delays, suspensions and other unexpected events

Aaron sets projects up for success and then supports clients with realistic, practical advice at every stage in the project life cycle. Before developing this strength, Aaron practised corporate and securities law at a well-known Canadian business law firm and in the Toronto office of a global law firm, giving him insight into the broader business context in which capital projects are evaluated, funded and built.
