Partner, Intellectual Property and Technology

Jonathan has been consistently ranked by international legal directories such as Chambers and Partners; Legal 500; Asia Law Profiles; World Trademark Review and IAM Patents 1000 for his expertise in Intellectual Property (IP) and Technology, Media and Telecoms (TMT).

Jonathan’s areas of practice can be classified into 3 broad sectors; namely, Franchise & Licensing; Media & Entertainment; and Technology. He works with both local and international clients in these sectors to grow and expand their businesses in the region. He is one of the few practitioners in this region specialising in Media and Entertainment law. With the adoption of new technology, he is often sought by media and tech companies to advise on the creation and protection of media content and digital assets as well as the use of such content and assets on new digital platforms. He is also external counsel to a number of international media and tech companies who seek his counsel on their day-to-day operations.

His work ranges from the identification and protection of his clients’ intellectual property assets, including the processing and analysis of data, to the commercialisation of their intellectual property assets through partnerships, distributions, collaborations and licensing. He has been engaged by international media and tech companies to represent them on complex licensing and IP acquisition transactions involving parties in different jurisdictions.

He is a member of Withers tech, which comprises a team of highly experienced lawyers with expertise in the investment funds, tax structuring, investments in tech companies, mergers and acquisitions of tech companies or technology assets, and commercialisation of digital assets.

Jonathan is a member of the Singapore Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (SDRP) panel, an Exco member of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA) – Singapore Chapter, and an Exco member of the Cloud & Data Chapter of SGTech, the premier trade association of the tech industry in Singapore. Singapore > TMT: local firms

(Firms to watch)

Withers KhattarWong LLP has latterly been strengthening its technology offering in Asia, most notably with the recent hire of Jonathan Kok, formerly of RHTLaw Asia LLP; he joins an increasingly recognised team which fields well regarded practitioners such as Jim Lim.

Singapore > Intellectual property: Local firms

Withers KhattarWong LLP has a fine reputation in contentious IP, particularly in transactional-related and licensing matters. It is also noted for trade mark infringement and passing off actions at the High Court, along with opposition and revocation cases before the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore. The arrival of Alvin Lim as special counsel from Ravindran Associates in 2021, broadens the firm’s offering in contentious IP, including in the patent, trade marks, copyright and trade secrets segments. The wider team continues to be known for its work in the tech sector, though it has a breadth of experience across multiple industries. Jonathan Kok  leads the team with Jim Lim  retiring from the partnership to become a consultant.
