Career

I’m head of Bird & Bird’s Dispute Resolution practice in Australia and specialise in media and technology advice and disputes.

My work has included complex IT&T disputes including in relation to software projects, and intellectual property issues. This work includes acting for leading computer games publishers in relation to unauthorised game mods.

I have acted for leading media companies over more than two decades in defamation, copyright and other disputes. I regularly provide pre-publication advice to media and internet clients.
Privacy is a key part of my practice. I have assisted high profile clients with submissions in relation to each of the privacy law reform processes since 2000, including the current reform processes. I regularly support clients who have suffered data breaches, including as part of the Bird & Bird cross-border team which supports clients across national borders. We also regularly advise on privacy compliance, including in the specialist media and cloud computing contexts. I am also experienced in advising on surveillance law compliance.

I am listed as a leading lawyer in Doyles, in Best Lawyers since its inception in 2008, in Chambers Asia-Pacific, Legal 500 Asia-Pacific and in Euromoney Women in Business Law. I am co-author of Thomson Reuter’s Media & Internet Law & Practice.

With its expert knowledge of the industry, coupled with a capacity for ‘lateral and strategic thought’, the team at Bird & Bird attracts a broad spectrum of global and domestic clients. While it is well-equipped to deal with traditional media matters, the group particularly leverages its strong presence in the computer games industry and knowledge of sports media rights sales and acquisitions, the latter of which has been further cemented following the recent addition of sports law expert Brianna Quinn. The team is co-headed by Sophie Dawson, who has extensive experience in privacy, copyright and defamation law; and media lawyer Shane Barber, who is highly sought after by gaming businesses seeking regulatory aid.
