Tom is a corporate and commercial law expert. He has extensive experience advising on domestic and cross-border M&A, strategic joint ventures, corporate restructurings and capital markets transactions. Tom has worked on complex deals in every jurisdiction in ASEAN, with a specific focus on South and Southeast Asia.
Tom is a legal adviser to the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and is also appointed to the editorial board of HealthInvestor Asia. Tom most recently joined the global advisory board of Inle Advisory Group, a boutique firm focused on development opportunities in Myanmar.
Stephenson Harwood LLP has excellent regional mid-market credentials, however, it is moving up the value chain to achieve a presence in bigger-ticket transactions. Across Southeast Asia, it has built an extensive record in headline strategic acquisitions, private equity transactions and venture capital investments. Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam are key jurisdictions for the Singapore team. It has a strong presence in healthcare, TMT and consumer goods. Tom Platts is an established Singapore figure with exceptional regional credentials, particularly in Myanmar. George Cyriac is playing an anchor role in developing the firm’s private equity and venture capital practice, most notably in Indonesia. Of counsel Helen Rhind-Hufnagel is also a key name.
Major financial institutions, private equity funds and multinational corporations turn to Stephenson Harwood LLP in investments and finance transactions involving the Philippines. Transport finance is a particular strength. The team has expanded considerably through several recent hires; this includes the hire of Gregory Xu, who joined from Clifford Chance in 2018 and was promoted to partner in 2019, and the arrival of Martin Brown and John Simpson (and others), who joined from Ince in 2018 and 2019, respectively. George Cyriac is another key contact; he advised AIGF, a Singapore-headquartered private equity fund, on its investment in Philippines-based co-working and flexible workspace provider KMC Solutions. Tom Platts heads the practice.
Stephenson Harwood has shown a consistent interest in Myanmar over the years, which was further solidified by the opening of the firm’s Yangon office in 2017. Together with colleagues in the firm’s Singapore office, the Myanmar team handles a variety of general corporate, M&A and investment work and has experience in project development mandates in the real estate, agriculture and mining sectors. Headed by Singapore-based Tom Platts, the firm was involved in a matter arising out of one of the country’s most significant recent regulatory developments: the liberalisation of the country’s insurance market. The team acted for Chubb Insurance in its successful bid for a foreign insurance operating license; one of only five licenses available for bid.
