Career

After graduating from Istanbul University, Rona Kaspi has qualified as a lawyer registered to Istanbul bar Association. Rona has been practicing law specialized in shipping and maritime since 1995. Rona has co-founded AKT Law Firm with M. Cem Kaspi and Melih Aji in 2000. In the meantime, Rona successfully completed his master’s degree in civil law at Istanbul Ticaret University.

Rona has been known for his achievements and extraordinary track record in assisting the foreign banks and financial institutions such as Caterpillar Financial Services, Deutschebank, UniCredit, Commerzbank, Nord Deutsche Landesbank, HSH Nord Bank, HBU Bank, ABN Amro, with transactional matters and dispute resolution, restructuring and enforcement of securities, in relation to ship financing and wet work (cargo claims, collusion, grounding etc.).

Rona has been recognized as a top tier lawyer as he is one of the few individuals specialized in both litigation and transactional part of the maritime sector.

Since 2001, Turkey has been known for its shipyards building ‘tailor-made’ vessels and Rona has always been the first name to come to the minds of shipyards and shipowners. As such, he has an extensive knowledge in negotiating shipbuilding contracts and assisting with all kinds of claims and disputes arising from the shipbuilding contracts and the period following the delivery of the new built vessels. He has advised on the negotiation of the shipbuilding contracts for the building of an offshore wind farm, three ground-breaking emissions-free battery electric tugs, first Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) powered escort tugs, various conversion agreements for powership vessels.

Rona has also been appointed as a Special Agent of the Republic of the Marshall Islands in 2009. Marshall Islands Registry is the third largest commercial flag in the world and more than 60 Marshall Islands maritime companies are listed in New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and 50 Marshall Islands maritime companies are listed in London Stock Exchange. Rona is also a member of Quality Council of the Republic of the Marshall Islands Ship Registry.

Rona has been attending various conferences and seminars as a lecturer such as seminars organized by Yildiz Technical University, Akdeniz University, Gedik University and 9 Eylül University, as well as international conferences such as Marine Money and Mare Forum.

Rona has been acting as the leading lawyer in both civil and criminal actions in relation to a maritime related dispute for a Hong Kong based group company in several jurisdictions such as England, Namibia, Greece and Panama, worth around USD 200,000,000.-

He is currently representing 20 shipyards and advising 5 Turkish banks on a regular basis.
