Mr. Ercan Demir joined AKT Law Firm as a Senior Partner after working for major maritime law firms in Turkey for 13 years.

Career

Ercan joined AKT Law Firm in 2013 as a senior partner, after working for 11 years for a major law firm.

Ercan was educated at Istanbul University and then went on to study EU Law at Marmara University. He has been qualified to practice law in 2000 and specialized in dispute resolution particularly on shipping, insurance and commodity trade matters.  Ercan possesses a remarkable track record in litigation, having successfully represented numerous clients in high-stake cases involving multiple jurisdictions across a wide range of industries including oil and gas, shipping and insurance.

Ercan’s ability to analyze complex legal issues, coupled with a strong attention to detail, allows for the development of effective litigation strategies that mitigate risks and maximize opportunities for his clients.

Ercan also has an extensive experience in commercial arbitration practice. He represents clients in all forms of international arbitration – ad hoc, institutional and trade arbitrations before international tribunals. His recent work on arbitration includes:

• Appointment as Arbitrator:  He recently acted as an umpire and drafted the award in a Turkish law arbitration on a ship repair contract. He also received appointments as arbitrator in two LMAA arbitrations related to charterparty disputes.
• Acting as Counsel: He is currently acting as counsel in several LCIA-LMAA/London, ICAC/Moscow, SCC/Stockholm ICC/Turkey arbitration cases. He recently helped his Clients secure a settlement on an LCIA arbitration involving an aircraft purchase agreement and an LMAA arbitration on sale and purchase of a vessel.
• Post-Arbitration Procedures: He is currently handling a setting aside action on an investment dispute involving the new Istanbul Airport, where the disputed amount is around EUR 28,000,000.  He has successfully obtained an Turkish High Court order allowing enforcement of an English law award on a complex dispute on delivery of a particular equipment and a separate costs award in the amount of GBP 1,800,000.

In 2022, he assisted investors in a major residence complex development project in Cyprus and also advised clients on contracts involving gas sale and purchase. He recently undertook the contract management for a Turkish electric motors manufacturer for expansion of their business into the US and Canada.
