Work Department

Injury and medical claims.

Position

Dr Jock Mackenzie has a broad clinical negligence practice but, due to his background as a hospital physician, he has a particular interest and expertise in cases involving complex medicine and rare medical conditions; brain injury (both adult and child, including birth injuries and cerebral palsy); neurological, neurosurgical and spinal injuries; emergency and intensive care; and general internal medicine.  He also has significant experience of treatment in the private sector, especially cases involving foreign nationals being treated in UK private hospitals, cases involving fatal injuries caused by medical care, and surgical cases.  Some examples of Jock’s recently concluded successful cases include two private medicine cases involving seven figure sum settlements: one for an adult with PVS (persistent vegetative state) from the Middle East due to negligent anaesthetic care and the other for an Eastern European businessman who suffered with septic shock due to a negligent delay in diagnosis of post-operative peritonitis.  Other recently concluded cases include a woman who suffered a hysterectomy following a post-partum haemorrhage; a delay in diagnosis of respiratory tuberculosis; and a failure to diagnose a serious finger injury resulting in permanent disability. Jock has also negotiated settlements for very substantial lump sums together with significant periodical payments for life. His current brain injury work includes a case involving an anaesthetic incident in a private hospital, one concerning the removal of a central venous catheter and another revolving around a missed radiological diagnosis.  He also has cases involving cauda equina syndrome, side-effects of Parkinson’s disease treatment, obstetric care and fatal cases involving cardiology care. Jock has considerable experience in acting for clients who are resident abroad, including in the U.S., the Middle East (in particular Kuwait), India and Europe, especially clients who come to England specifically for specialist private medical treatment.

Career

Jock is a dual qualified medical doctor and solicitor, and a partner in the clinical negligence department at Anthony Gold.  He qualified as a doctor at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London in 1990 and practised as a full-time hospital physician for nearly five years before deciding to retrain as a solicitor to specialise in clinical negligence work.  He qualified as a solicitor at Leigh Day in 1998 and became a Partner in 2003, continuing to work as a doctor part-time at St. Bartholomew's until 2004.  He joined Anthony Gold as a Partner in January 2013.  Jock has been the author of the Solicitors’ Journal updates in clinical negligence law since 2007.  He contributes to the Personal Injury Law Journal and Personal Injury Brief Update Law Journal and is the current author of the Funding chapter in Kemp & Kemp.  Jock became a Solicitor-Advocate (Higher Courts Civil Proceedings) in 2013.
