Eddie is an intellectual property, technology and commercial law specialist and has over 20 years’ experience in advising clients across a broad spectrum of legal issues. Eddie has considerable experience in handling a wide variety of commercial issues and disputes involving all kinds of IP. He regularly advises on transactions ranging from IP exploitation through licensing or transfers to complex corporate or financing projects where IP is a key business asset. Eddie combines this with practical experience in enforcing IP rights and defending IP claims. He has considerable experience in advising content providers and publishers in this area. He advises on commercial transactions such as licensing, distribution, franchising, agency and manufacturing arrangements, and technology projects such as IT procurement, supply and development. He regularly deals with e-business issues for clients across a range of industries. Eddie is also a member of Fladgate’s hotels and leisure team, advising hotel and restaurant owners, operators and brands on management and franchise contracts. Eddie also has considerable experience in data protection and privacy legal issues. Competition law issues are part and parcel of Eddie’s work and he advises on the European and UK rules in this area, particularly those relating to free movement of goods and services within Europe. Eddie was part of the team that defended Tesco in the landmark litigation concerning non-European grey goods that reached the European Court of Justice in 2002.

Fladgate LLP's 'first-class team' provides the full spectrum of commercial contracts advice to broadcasters, hotel owners and operators, universities and sports governing bodies (national and international), among a broad base of clients. Team head Eddie Powell combines commercial contracts expertise with knowledge about related intellectual property, technology and competition law issues; his varied work includes technology transactions (such as IT procurement, supply and development), manufacturing arrangements and licensing agreements. In a recent highlight, Powell and Alex Haffner (an addition from Dentons in 2017) acted for Glorious Brands Limited in the negotiation of an exclusive distribution agreement with US-based Astral Brands Inc for the distribution in the UK and Ireland of beauty products under the PUR brand. In addition, Haffner advised Mermaid Conferences & Events Limited on an agreement with White Light Limited (WLL) for WLL to provide audio-visual and other services to customers using the Mermaid Centre in central London. Also recommended are Alan Wetterhahn, James Earl, Jan Hoppe (a recent hire from Gordon Dadds LLP) and senior associate David Quinlan.

Starting January 1st, 2013, a new tax law (Law No. 822, Tax Concertation Law) came into force in and completely changed the taxation system in Nicaragua. Two years later a new law was issued by the National Assembly containing more than 80 amendments, additions and repeals (Law No 891) which came into force December 18th, 2014.
