Uría Menéndez – Proença Carvalho combines ‘global quality standards and know-how’ with ‘exceptional local insight and connectivity with different players in the market’. Of counsel Ana Sá Couto and senior associate Miguel Stokes assisted key client Banco Santander with the issuance of contingent redeemable subordinated bonds to retail clients affected by the resolution on Banco Popular; jointly with practice co-head Carlos Costa Andrade, Stokes advised Altice and Meo on the takeover offer by the latter for Media Capital. Jorge Brito Pereira left the firm in 2020.
Uría Menéndez – Proença Carvalho's team is ‘very capable and motivated’. Antonio Villacampa assisted Meo in the attempted acquisition of Vertix, 94.69% owner of Grupo Media Capital and Francisco Brito e Abreu advised Alantra on the acquisition of a 70% stake in MD Moldes. Fraud and white-collar crime Tier 1
Uría Menéndez – Proença Carvalho represents companies and individuals in some of the most high-profile economic crime cases, such as its ongoing advice to Ricardo Salgado on over 100 cases relating to the collapse of BES and in Operation Marquês. It also successfully challenged the extradition request for businessman Raúl Schmidt in the context of the so-called Operation Car Wash, an investigation into money laundering in Brazil. This case was led by Alexandre Mota Pinto. The team is co-headed by Daniel Proença de Carvalho, Francisco Proença de Carvalho and Tito Arantes Fontes, and also includes Fernando Aguilar de Carvalho, Nuno Salazar Casanova and senior associate Adriano Squilacce.
Projects and project finance Tier 1
The ‘strongly committed and business-oriented’ team at Uría Menéndez – Proença Carvalho includes Bernardo Diniz de Ayala, Pedro Ferreira Malaquias and Antonio Villacampa and possesses public law, finance, projects and project finance and transactional experience. A highlight was assisting Neoen Development with solar projects contracts, including a long-term power-purchase agreement between the power generator, consumers and the selling agent. It advised Altice on the preparation of its parliamentary hearing and on the defence of the injunction requested by Vodafone against the Portuguese Competition Authority, in both instances within the context the client’s attempted acquisition of Media Capital. Uría Menéndez – Proença Carvalho saw the departure of João Torroaes Valente to Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados in April 2018, however, the ‘market leader’ Duarte Garin remains at the helm of the practice, which ‘delivers commercial and pragmatic solutions’. A young team handling sophisticated work, Uría Menéndez – Proença Carvalho is valued for its 'great know-how and experience' and 'assistance with global projects'. It acts for a range of banking clients, recently assisting Wizink Bank in a claim filed against the Labour Ministry concerning the interpretation of TUPE rules applied to the collective bargaining agreement within the context of the sale of Barclays’ card business to the client. Insolvency and restructuring Tier 2
Uría Menéndez – Proença Carvalho attracted high-profile matters, acting on both the debtor and creditor side, for clients in the construction, banking and private equity sectors. The team is noted for its ‘out-of-the-box recovery strategies’ and includes David Sequeira Dinis, a ‘very intelligent lawyer with enormous knowledge and ability to work’, and Nuno Salazar Casanova, who is singled out for his ‘availability, knowledge and negotiation skills’.
Tax Tier 2
Transactional work - especially in the real estate sector - and wealth management are cornerstones of Uría Menéndez – Proença Carvalho’s practice, and the team also handles contentious work. It advised BNP Paribas Real Estate on the tax aspects of the joint venture (and related share acquisition and sale) with Silcoge to develop office and residential projects in the Alcântara neighbourhood of Lisbon.
