Kim & Chang has ‘a strong team across the board’, and is ‘extremely responsive’, with ‘unparalleled knowledge of the regulatory environment’. Kevin Todd and Woong Park led advice to ING Group on restructuring its Asian operations through a share-based de-merger from a Korean insurance company. Jay Ahn heads the four-partner team, which also includes Young Hwa Paik. In 2012, Kil Soo Lee and Sung Nam Lee joined from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), and Young Soo Oh arrived from the Korea Insurance Research Institute.
Lee & Ko was bolstered in 2012 by the arrival of senior adviser Thae Woong Jung, who is valued by clients for his knowledge of the regulatory environment, which augmented the firm’s existing expertise in this area. The team was instructed by Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance to review an amendment to the Insurance Business Act. The firm is also active on the M&A side; for example, it advised Korea Life Insurance on its KRW1 trillion acquisition of Tong Yang Life Insurance.
Bae, Kim & Lee LLC’s practice is led by Jong Ku Kang and Jai Young Kim, and acts for foreign and domestic companies on regulatory matters. It recently advised the Korean government on a restructuring project involving seven life insurance companies. It also advises the FSS on policy.
Shin & Kim has a number of large insurance clients, including life insurance companies, and is particularly well known for refund guarantee work. The firm also advises on insurance disputes. Clients include Kumho Asiana Group and NH Life Insurance. Se Ryul Hong, Choon Cho, and Soo Hyun Lee are recommended.
Hwang Mok Park P.C.’s main focus is insurance litigation. Clients include Samsung Life Insurance.
