The lowdown - Pupils (in their own words) on Landmark Chambers

We sent The Legal 500 Future Lawyers Pupil and Junior Barrister survey to pupils and juniors up to two years in tenancy at Landmark Chambers. Here is what they had to say:

Why did you choose these chambers over any others?

‘I undertook pupillage at another chambers and moved to Landmark Chambers due to the quality of work, opportunities for career development and potential earning capacity. I also found the work-life balance to be preferable at Landmark Chambers, together with the clerks and juniors’, ‘mix of practice areas. Strong public law practitioners’

How does your training compare with what you hear from pupils/juniors at other chambers?

‘Whilst I did not undertake pupillage at Landmark Chambers, the training that is available to pupil barristers and junior barristers is exceptional in comparison to that of other chambers. Senior members of chambers are always available to assist with career development, and other juniors are always there to discuss issues or ideas. This is something that I have found more readily available at Landmark’, ‘better than others. High-quality work, excellent supervisors, focus on pupil wellbeing (pupils are not overworked), specialist training in areas of chambers’ specialisms. Could be more focus on advocacy training’

Best thing about chambers?

‘(a) The training, (b) clerks, (c) the social life with other juniors, (d) the collegiality and (e) the quality of work and availability of opportunities to develop’, ‘not stuffy. Modern and commercially focussed. Feels more like a firm or normal office rather than archaic Oxbridge-type set in the Inns’

Worst thing about chambers?

‘At times can be very quiet with no one if everyone works from home’

Best moment to date?

‘The opportunity to attend the Court of Appeal as sole counsel’, ‘High Court marshalling’

Worst moment to date?

‘Advocacy assessment’

CSR/Pro bono?

‘There are always pro bono opportunities’
