The lowdown - Pupils (in their own words) on Exchange Chambers

We sent The Legal 500 Future Lawyers Pupil and Junior Barrister survey to pupils and juniors up to two years in tenancy at Exchange Chambers. Here is what they had to say:

Why did you choose these chambers over any others?

‘The final interview was the most relaxed out of any of the interviews’, ‘they were friendly and supportive’, ‘everyone I met from Exchange Chambers was extremely approachable, friendly and eager to support me’, ‘

How does your training compare with what you hear from pupils/juniors at other chambers?

‘The training is much more hands on. I have been given drafting work to do on a weekly basis and was given work to complete from week one of pupillage’, ‘incredibly’, ‘I have been given a wide range of work that challenges me. During my fist six, I was able to observe such a variety of high-quality work that introduced me to many others within the legal world that made the transition into second six much easier. I have a fantastic supervisor who has supported me at every opportunity’, ‘chambers seems to involve a higher quality of work from the get-go’

Best thing about chambers?

‘Quality of work’, ‘the people’, ‘everyone wants to help’, ‘the collegiate atmosphere and the quality of work’

Worst thing about chambers?

‘People do not come in often’, ‘the pupillage award is a little on the low side’

Best moment to date?

‘Going to the Court of Appeal’, ‘winning my first case’, ‘I had the opportunity to assist with a multi-handed prosecution where I felt valued and was able to develop my knowledge and connections’, ‘being involved with very large/important cases from the beginning of my pupillage’

Worst moment to date?

‘Coming into chambers at 5pm on a Sunday to print bundles’, ‘panicking before my first case’

CSR/Pro bono?

‘Very good – chambers actively encourage me to get involved with pro-bono work. Chambers often host events for students. I was supported in applying to volunteer for the School’s Consent Project charity’, ‘for me personally, very good as I have already been invited to undertake pro bono work’
