Types of work undertaken:Commercial and property group: has extensive experience in all civil courts. Members regularly appear in the Mercantile Court, the Chancery Division and the technology and construction courts. Expertise includes banking, building and construction, commercial litigation including business sales, carriage of goods, consumer credit, contract, conveyancing, easements, inheritance, wills and trusts, company law, intellectual property, landlord and tenant work, equitable remedies, pre-trial relief, probate and housing.

Criminal group: provides excellence in legal advice and advocacy for all clients and in all areas of criminal law from the earliest stage of proceedings right through to appeals in the House of Lords. Members appear in all areas of the Northern Circuit and beyond in both Magistrates and Crown Courts and at inquests. Members are instructed by most of the major defence solicitors in the North West as well as by the CPS, HM Revenue & Customs, the Asset Recovery Agency and National Crime Agency. The team has notable experience in homicide, fraud, sexual offences and drugs. Some members have particular expertise in trading standards as well as confiscation, police law and human rights.

Insurance fraud group: consists of members who have led the market in partnership with chambers instructing solicitors on fraud rings, the tort of deceit, exemplary damages and low- velocity impact. The team has expertise in the following areas: staged accidents/RTA fraud, high-value ‘malingering’ PI cases, permanent health insurance, PPI, property insurance, non-disclosure/misrepresentation issues and exaggerated policy claims.

Employment group: notable expertise in unfair and wrongful dismissal, discrimination and equal opportunities, strikes and trade disputes, as well as transfer of undertakings, restraint of trade and confidential information, public law and judicial review. The team acts for employees and trade unions and for both private and public employers and employers’ associations, appearing in tribunals, courts at first instance, on appeal and at disciplinary hearings throughout the UK.

Family group: offers a wealth of experience in areas including adoption, ancillary relief, appeals, care proceedings, child abduction and cohabitees’ property disputes as well as contact and residence, divorce, nullity and judicial separation, domestic violence and applications under the Family Law Act 1996 as well as inheritance matters. Mental health is also a specialisation.

Regulatory and professional discipline: offers a well-balanced team in terms of prosecuting and defending complicated cases including corporate manslaughter, cases involving HSWA and other regulatory breaches. Specialist expertise is offered in relation to inquests linked to HSE investigations and in particular those involving difficult disclosure and/or causation issues. Members of the group are regularly instructed to prosecute at the GMC, dealing with perfomance and conduct issues.

Personal injury group: consists of members who regularly appear in leading cases of personal injury and clinical negligence including group actions. Strengths include high-value cases involving brain damage or serious spinal injury, industrial disease, occupational cancers, deafness, allegations of fraud or malingering, clinical negligence and fatal accidents.

Travel law group: members of chambers have a proven track record in cases involving jurisdiction and choice of law disputes and have the benefit of experience of legal systems in other jurisdictions, most notably the US, Canada, the Middle East and Europe. Significant recent cases undertaken by members of the chambers include Bacon v National Suiza.

Mediation group: provides a high quality, professional mediation service through a team of experienced mediators. The members come from a wide range of backgrounds, but with a particular focus on commercial, property and wills, trusts and probate disputes.
