Alex has undertaken a variety of work in the County Court including small claims trials, interim applications, fast track trials, a pre-trial review in a multi-track claim, possession hearings, and a disrepair claim. He has also appeared in the Business & Property Courts to present a winding up petition. He also has experience of drafting statements of case, opinions, and applications. Alex has also appeared in a number of property cases including a service charge dispute before the First Tier Tribunal. He has also worked at a silver circle law firm and acquired understanding in a range of commercial and civil law areas. Further to this Alex is familiar with forms of alternative dispute resolution having won his university’s negotiation competition on the Bar Professional Training Course.

Alex has previously worked in defamation, misuse of private information, breach of confidence, and data protection. In this role he worked on various high profile multi-week trials in the High Court with numerous witnesses both in England and Wales and abroad to appeals in the Court of Appeal (Civil Division) on nuanced points of law. His voluntary role as a Motorsport UK Steward means that Alex has an interest in sports law and he wishes to develop a practice in this area.

Alex gained extensive experience in the Magistrates’ Court and is building his practice in the Crown Court. Alex is a CPS Level 1 prosecutor but also acts for defendants in preliminary hearings, sentencing, and committals for sentence. Alex has had a number of successes in his criminal practice including successfully applying to stay proceedings in the Youth Court as an abuse of process on behalf of a very vulnerable child. He has represented clients accused of a variety of matters with a particular focus on driving offences. Alex has also represented clients in a number of exceptional hardship and special reasons sentencing hearings. He has also made a number of civil applications in the Magistrates’ Court including a closure order. Alex has also appeared in the Crown Court both defending a client who had appealed his conviction from the Magistrates’ Court and as for both the prosecution and defendants in sentencing and mention hearings. Alex has also conducted research into nuanced areas of criminal law and procedure including applications for Defendants to have intermediaries, what recourse there is where a previously bailed Defendant had been remanded after conviction but prior to sentence, and under what circumstances an appeal court would re-open their determination.

Before commencing pupillage Alex successfully appealed decisions made by public bodies through his pro-bono work with the Free Representation Unit (FRU) on social security appeals and educational appeals with Independent Parental Special Education Advice (IPSEA). Appeals in the latter were against refusals to assess for and the contents of sections B, F, and I in Education, Health, and Care plans. He has also shadowed counsel and marshalled in the Coroner’s Court. Alex has continued to gain experience in education law by clerking a school admissions appeal panels and governor disciplinary committee hearings, successfully representing parents in sections B, F, and I against local authorities, and representing a student before an Independent Review Panel.
