Senior Associate

James Spencer is a UK and European patent attorney in the engineering, manufacturing and consumer products group.

James works predominantly with multinational companies and SMEs across a wide range of engineering and technology sectors, including electronic cigarettes, atomisers, medical devices, hospital beds, lighting systems and energy storage systems.

Career

Prior to becoming a patent attorney, James obtained a master’s degree in physics from the University of Warwick. His studies included a broad range of topics, such as electromagnetism, electronics, mechanics, solid state physics, and thermodynamics. He also completed a final year project in the field of non-destructive testing, particularly focussed on eddy current inspection. His academic background enables James to handle work across a variety of technical fields.

Handling an extensive drafting and prosecution workload, James has gained significant experience managing global patent portfolios for his clients. He also has experience providing patentability, infringement and freedom to operate opinions, and experience of opposition and appeal proceedings at the European Patent Office. James enjoys understanding the challenges facing his clients, and working with his clients to achieve their goals.

James spent over six months working in house for a multinational client in Switzerland, which provided him with an in depth understanding of the commercial issues affecting the client, and the issues facing in house patent teams.
